India dropped to 54th place in the WEF’s Travel and Tourism Development Index, Japan at number one

SPT News Desk: After the Covid-19 pandamic, the travel and tourism sector around the world has become straight again. People are once again heading for the destination of their choice. The World Economic Forum conducted a study on the subject. Japan topped their survey of 117 countries. However, India’s travel and tourism sector has shown “signs of recovery”. South Asia’s top performers according to the latest World Economic Forum (WEF) research.

Showing signs of recovery

India is ranked 54th in the overall rankings, down from 46th in 2019. The Travel and Tourism Development Index has evaluated a total of 117 countries for the study. Even after the travel and tourism industry has recovered from the effects of the Covid-19 epidemic, the sector is now showing signs of recovery in many parts of the world.

Top 10 countries

Entitled ‘Travel and Tourism Development Index 2021: Rebuilding for a Sustainable and Sustainable Future’, the study “sets out the causes and policies that enable sustainable and resilient development of the T&T sector to contribute to the development of a country.”

In this year’s index – which consists of five sub-indices, 17 columns and 112 individual indices – Japan ranks first, followed by the United States, Spain, France and Germany in the top five. The next five countries are Switzerland, Australia, United Kingdom, Singapore and Italy. Apart from the United States, the top-10 scoring economies are the high-income economies of Europe or Asia-Pacific. After Japan topped the list, regional economies Australia and Singapore are in seventh and ninth place, respectively. Italy joined the top 10 in 2021 (from 12th in 2019), while Canada moved from 10th to 13th.

According to UNWTO, the difference in international tourist arrivals between January 2021 and January 2022 alone is greater than the increase in all arrivals in 2021.

Uppink has re-emphasized travel and tourism in many economies of the world

Lauren Uppink, head of aviation, travel and tourism at the World Economic Forum, said-

  • “The COVID shutdowns have re-emphasized the important contribution that travel and tourism have made to many of the world’s economies.”
  • “As the world emerges from the epidemic, economies need to invest in creating a strong and resilient environment for the travel and tourism experience and service delivery over the next few decades.”
  • “Government, business and civil society leaders can tackle obstacles to recovery by looking at a variety of factors that can support the long-term development and resilience of their respective travel and tourism economies,” he added.
  • “It will require decision-makers to recover ৷ consumer confidence and international openness by prioritizing issues such as improved health and safety measures, encouraging inclusive labor practices, improving environmental sustainability, and investing in digital technology. “

Tourist arrivals have increased

The study further revealed that global tourist arrivals in January this year increased by 18 million compared to the same period in 2021, they were still 67 percent below the 2019 level.
