এসপিটি নিউজ, ৬ আগস্ট: ভারতের পতাকাবাহী বিমান সংস্থা এয়ার ইন্ডিয়ার পুনর্গঠনের পরবর্তী অধ্যায়ে বড় পদক্ষেপ নিল টাটা গ্রুপ। সংস্থাটি নতুন প্রধান নির্বাহী কর্মকর্তা (CEO) ও ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক (Managing Director) হিসেবে ইথিওপিয়ান এয়ারলাইন্সের সাবেক প্রধান টেওল্ডে গেব্রেমারিয়াম (Tewolde Gebremariam)-কে নিয়োগের ঘোষণা দিয়েছে। দীর্ঘদিনের অনুসন্ধান শেষে এই নিয়োগকে এয়ার ইন্ডিয়ার ভবিষ্যৎ রূপান্তরের অন্যতম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সিদ্ধান্ত হিসেবে দেখা হচ্ছে।
গেব্রেমারিয়াম আগামী ১ অক্টোবর দায়িত্ব গ্রহণ করবেন। তিনি বিদায়ী CEO ক্যাম্পবেল উইলসন-এর স্থলাভিষিক্ত হচ্ছেন। উইলসন ২০২২ সালে টাটা গ্রুপের হাতে এয়ার ইন্ডিয়ার মালিকানা ফিরে আসার পর সংস্থার ব্র্যান্ড পুনর্গঠন, নতুন বিমান কেনার পরিকল্পনা এবং বিস্তারা–এয়ার ইন্ডিয়া একীভূতকরণের মতো গুরুত্বপূর্ণ উদ্যোগের নেতৃত্ব দিয়েছিলেন। তবে চলতি বছরের এপ্রিলে তিনি পদত্যাগের ঘোষণা দেন এবং সেপ্টেম্বরের শেষ পর্যন্ত দায়িত্ব পালন করবেন।
নতুন CEO এমন এক সময় দায়িত্ব নিতে চলেছেন, যখন এয়ার ইন্ডিয়া একাধিক বড় চ্যালেঞ্জের মুখোমুখি। গত অর্থবছরে সংস্থাটি ২ বিলিয়ন মার্কিন ডলারেরও বেশি রেকর্ড আর্থিক ক্ষতির মুখে পড়েছে। পাশাপাশি গত বছরের ভয়াবহ বিমান দুর্ঘটনার পর নিরাপত্তা ও পরিচালন ব্যবস্থা নিয়ে নিয়ন্ত্রক সংস্থাগুলোর বাড়তি নজরদারিরও সম্মুখীন হয়েছে এয়ার ইন্ডিয়া। ফলে সংস্থার আর্থিক পুনরুদ্ধারের পাশাপাশি যাত্রীদের আস্থা ফিরিয়ে আনা এবং পরিচালন দক্ষতা বাড়ানোই হবে নতুন CEO-র সবচেয়ে বড় অগ্রাধিকার।
আন্তর্জাতিক বিমান পরিবহন শিল্পে টেওল্ডে গেব্রেমারিয়ামকে একজন দক্ষ “টার্নঅ্যারাউন্ড স্পেশালিস্ট” বা সংকট মোকাবিলায় সফল নেতৃত্ব হিসেবে বিবেচনা করা হয়। তিনি প্রায় চার দশক ইথিওপিয়ান এয়ারলাইন্সে বিভিন্ন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পদে কাজ করেন এবং CEO হিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠানটিকে আফ্রিকার বৃহত্তম ও অন্যতম লাভজনক বিমান সংস্থায় পরিণত করতে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রাখেন। তাঁর নেতৃত্বে ইথিওপিয়ান এয়ারলাইন্স বৈশ্বিক রুট সম্প্রসারণ, আধুনিক বহর গঠন এবং কোভিড-১৯ মহামারির মতো কঠিন সময়ও তুলনামূলক সফলভাবে মোকাবিলা করে।
এয়ার ইন্ডিয়ার চেয়ারম্যান এন. চন্দ্রশেখরন বলেছেন, সংস্থাটি এখন পুনর্গঠনের এমন এক পর্যায়ে প্রবেশ করছে, যেখানে পরিকল্পনার চেয়ে বাস্তবায়নের গুরুত্ব অনেক বেশি। তাঁর মতে, এয়ার ইন্ডিয়াকে বিশ্বের অন্যতম শীর্ষস্থানীয় পূর্ণাঙ্গ আন্তর্জাতিক বিমান সংস্থায় পরিণত করতে এখনও কয়েক বছরের ধারাবাহিক প্রচেষ্টা প্রয়োজন হবে।
বিশ্লেষকদের মতে, গেব্রেমারিয়ামের আন্তর্জাতিক অভিজ্ঞতা, বড় বিমান সংস্থা পরিচালনার দক্ষতা এবং দীর্ঘমেয়াদি কৌশলগত নেতৃত্ব এয়ার ইন্ডিয়ার জন্য গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সম্পদ হতে পারে। তবে তাঁর সামনে কাজ মোটেও সহজ নয়। বহর আধুনিকীকরণ, সময়নিষ্ঠ পরিষেবা নিশ্চিত করা, পরিচালন ব্যয় নিয়ন্ত্রণ, কর্মক্ষমতা বৃদ্ধি এবং আন্তর্জাতিক প্রতিযোগিতায় এয়ার ইন্ডিয়াকে আরও শক্তিশালী অবস্থানে নিয়ে যাওয়াই হবে তাঁর নেতৃত্বের সবচেয়ে বড় পরীক্ষা।
টাটা গ্রুপের অধীনে এয়ার ইন্ডিয়ার পুনর্জাগরণের যে উচ্চাকাঙ্ক্ষী পরিকল্পনা শুরু হয়েছে, টেওল্ডে গেব্রেমারিয়ামের নিয়োগকে সেই দীর্ঘমেয়াদি রূপান্তর যাত্রার নতুন মাইলফলক হিসেবেই দেখছে আন্তর্জাতিক বিমান পরিবহন শিল্প।

Air India Appoints Tewolde Gebremariam as CEO to Lead Next Phase of Transformation
New Delhi, Aug. 6 (SPT): Air India has appointed former Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Tewolde Gebremariam as its new Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, entrusting the veteran aviation executive with leading the Tata Group-owned carrier through its next phase of transformation.
Gebremariam will assume office on October 1, succeeding Campbell Wilson, who has led Air India since 2022 following the airline’s return to Tata Group ownership. Wilson will remain in his role until the end of September to ensure a smooth leadership transition.
The appointment comes at a pivotal moment for Air India, which is pursuing an ambitious turnaround strategy aimed at modernising its fleet, improving operational performance, strengthening customer service and expanding its global network. The airline has also completed the integration of Vistara into its operations as part of its long-term restructuring plan.
Industry observers regard Gebremariam as one of the aviation sector’s most accomplished airline executives. During his tenure at Ethiopian Airlines, he transformed the carrier into Africa’s largest and one of the world’s fastest-growing airline groups. Under his leadership, Ethiopian Airlines expanded its international footprint, modernised its fleet, improved profitability and successfully navigated the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
His appointment follows a period of significant challenges for Air India. The airline has been working to address operational issues, strengthen safety oversight and restore profitability while implementing one of the aviation industry’s largest fleet renewal programmes. The carrier is also seeking to enhance its competitiveness against leading global airlines as international air travel continues to recover.
Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran said the airline is entering a critical stage where execution of its transformation strategy will be key to achieving its long-term vision. He expressed confidence that Gebremariam’s global experience and proven leadership would help accelerate the airline’s progress toward becoming a world-class full-service international carrier.
Analysts believe Gebremariam’s extensive experience in managing large-scale airline operations and executing long-term strategic growth will be valuable as Air India seeks to improve operational reliability, enhance passenger experience and strengthen its position in the increasingly competitive global aviation market.
The leadership change is widely seen as a significant milestone in Tata Group’s efforts to rebuild Air India into a globally competitive airline and reinforce India’s presence in international aviation.
