Centre Backs West Bengal’s Tourism Push, Highlights North Bengal and New Destinations
SPT NEWS, Kolkata, October 2, 2026: The Centre has signalled stronger support for West Bengal’s efforts to expand and modernise its tourism sector, with Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat highlighting the state’s diverse natural, cultural and heritage assets and its potential to emerge as a major tourism destination in eastern India.
Speaking at the ICC Hospitality & Tourism Summit in Kolkata, Shekhawat underlined the tourism potential of West Bengal, particularly its tea gardens, mountain landscapes, forests, heritage sites and cultural traditions. He highlighted the wider North Bengal region, including Darjeeling, the Dooars and Malda, as areas with significant scope for further tourism development.
The Union minister said West Bengal’s tourism potential extends well beyond a handful of established destinations. Its combination of the Himalayas, tea plantations, forests, wildlife, rivers, coastline, historical sites, religious centres, cuisine and cultural traditions gives the state a broad tourism portfolio that can support multiple segments of the industry.
Darjeeling and its surrounding tea-growing areas remain among the state’s most recognisable tourism assets, while the Dooars offers opportunities centred on forests and wildlife. Malda, with its historic monuments and archaeological heritage, represents another important dimension of the state’s tourism offering. Bringing these destinations into a more integrated tourism network could help create longer visitor itineraries and encourage tourists to explore multiple regions of West Bengal.
The Centre is also considering proposals to develop selected destinations in West Bengal as international-standard iconic tourism destinations. Such a move could place greater emphasis on destination infrastructure, visitor facilities, connectivity, heritage conservation, interpretation, cleanliness and sustainable tourism practices.
The Union government has indicated that it is prepared to support West Bengal’s efforts to unlock its tourism potential. The state’s geographical diversity and its location as a gateway to the eastern and north-eastern parts of India are seen as important advantages in developing tourism circuits that connect different destinations and experiences.
The discussions in Kolkata also highlighted the possibility of expanding tourism beyond traditional hill and beach destinations. River-based tourism, wildlife tourism, heritage tourism, nature-based travel and cultural tourism are emerging as areas with considerable scope for development.
The state government has also outlined several initiatives aimed at broadening West Bengal’s tourism landscape. Plans being considered include water-based air connectivity in parts of Digha and the Sundarbans, development of tiger-oriented tourism facilities at Jharkhali and further expansion of river tourism.
The discussions come against the backdrop of West Bengal’s plans to attract substantial investment into tourism infrastructure. State Tourism Minister Dr Shankar Ghosh has said that the state is targeting around ₹2,500 crore in direct investment in tourism infrastructure, while ₹500 crore has been allocated for tourism in the 2026–27 financial year.
Several emerging destinations are also being considered for infrastructure and tourism development, including Mirik and Kalimpong. The broader strategy is aimed at encouraging private investment, improving visitor facilities and creating employment opportunities across different parts of the state.
The state government has also reported investment proposals worth ₹12,634 crore from a recent tourism investment initiative. The proposals include hotels and resorts, restoration of heritage properties and other tourism-related infrastructure projects.
Among the projects being discussed are the development of Bakreshwar around its hot springs and the restoration and adaptive use of heritage properties. These initiatives indicate an attempt to diversify West Bengal’s tourism economy beyond conventional sightseeing and promote wellness, heritage, culture and nature-based experiences.
West Bengal’s principal tourism advantage lies in the extraordinary diversity contained within a single state. The Himalayan landscapes and tea gardens of North Bengal, the forests and wildlife of the Dooars, the mangrove ecosystem of the Sundarbans, the beaches of East Midnapore, the forests and hills of western Bengal, the historic sites of Malda and Murshidabad, and Kolkata’s architectural and cultural heritage together create a wide-ranging tourism proposition.
The state also has several destinations with national and international recognition, including Darjeeling, the Sundarbans and Kolkata. Darjeeling’s tea heritage and mountain railway, along with the Sundarbans’ mangrove ecosystem and wildlife, provide West Bengal with tourism assets that extend beyond conventional domestic travel and have potential to attract international visitors.
The Kolkata summit therefore highlighted a broader approach to tourism development in West Bengal—one that seeks to connect established destinations with emerging ones and combine natural, cultural, historical and wildlife resources within a more integrated tourism framework.
For West Bengal, the immediate challenge will be to translate the investment proposals and policy announcements into improved infrastructure, seamless connectivity, quality accommodation, sustainable visitor management and better experiences for tourists.
With the Centre indicating its willingness to support the state and West Bengal simultaneously seeking investment and developing new tourism products, the coming years could see significant changes in the state’s tourism map. The focus will now be on how effectively the proposed projects are implemented and how successfully West Bengal converts its diverse tourism resources into sustainable destinations capable of attracting visitors from across India and overseas.
