Thailand’s Isan Region Set for a Tourism Boost as International Horticultural Expo Opens New Travel Opportunities
SPT NEWS, BANGKOK, 4 NOVEMBER: Thailand’s northeastern region of Isan is preparing for a major tourism attraction with the launch of the Udon Thani International Horticultural Expo. Running for 134 days, from 1 November 2026 to 14 March 2027, the international event will take place at Nong Dae Wetland in Udon Thani. The expo is expected to create fresh opportunities for regional tourism, bringing together horticulture, nature, local culture and heritage while encouraging visitors to explore the surrounding destinations.
The first international horticultural expo of its kind in Thailand’s Northeast will showcase the region’s natural and cultural identity. Located approximately 15 minutes from Udon Thani International Airport and the railway station, the venue features local symbols including the white-winged duck, centella, dendrobium orchids and traditional Isan streamer flags.
For visitors attending the expo, the surrounding region offers several attractive travel opportunities. Winter is an ideal time to explore Isan, with a number of scenic destinations accessible from Udon Thani.
Around 50 kilometres from Udon Thani lies Nong Han Kumphawapi, popularly known as Talay Bua Daeng, or the Red Lotus Sea. During the cooler months, the lake transforms into a spectacular landscape covered with thousands of pink water lilies. However, visitors travelling in early November should not expect the flowers to be in full bloom. Although the season may begin in November, flowering generally becomes more extensive from mid-December, with the best viewing period from mid-January to mid-February. The flowers usually open fully between 6:00 am and 11:00 am before closing as the sun grows stronger. Interestingly, despite its popular name, the lake’s famous blooms are technically water lilies rather than true lotus flowers.
A visit to the Red Lotus Sea can also be combined with a trip to Ban Chiang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its archaeological remains, including Bronze Age burial sites and ancient pottery.
For travellers interested in natural rock formations, history and monumental sculptures, the route connecting Phu Phra Bat and Nong Khai offers another rewarding experience. Located approximately 67 kilometres from Udon Thani, Phu Phra Bat can be reached in around an hour by car. As direct public transport is limited, hiring a vehicle is recommended.
Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Phu Phra Bat is famous for its distinctive sandstone formations, shaped over thousands of years by natural erosion. The landscape features remarkable pillars, caves and rock overhangs. The park is open daily from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, with an admission fee of 100 baht for international visitors.
From Phu Phra Bat, travellers can continue towards Nong Khai to visit Sala Kaeo Ku Sculpture Park. The park features enormous concrete sculptures inspired by Buddhist and Hindu religious traditions. Visitors can round off the day by enjoying a sunset along the Mekong River.
Those seeking mountain landscapes, forests and cooler weather can plan a longer journey towards Loei province, home to Phu Kradueng National Park and Phu Luang Wildlife Sanctuary. An overnight stay is recommended for this route.
Phu Kradueng National Park remains closed during the rainy season, from 1 June to 30 September. November to February brings cooler and more pleasant weather, making it an attractive period for visitors. Meanwhile, temperatures at Phu Luang Wildlife Sanctuary can drop to between 0 and 16 degrees Celsius from November to January. During this period, visitors may encounter dendrobium orchids, white wild orchids and rhododendrons, adding to the region’s botanical appeal.
For plant enthusiasts, Isan offers several additional attractions. The pink water lilies of Nong Han remain the region’s headline attraction, while the Phu Phra Bat Buabok forest area is associated with centella, commonly known as gotu kola or pennywort. This small creeping herb grows in damp environments and is also one of the local symbols represented at the horticultural expo.
Dendrobium orchids are another important feature of the region’s natural heritage. Around 12 species of dendrobium orchids have been recorded on the plateau of Phu Kradueng, most of them growing as epiphytes on other plants. As flowering periods vary between species, visitors are advised to consult local park rangers for information about blooms during their visit.
Another unusual attraction is the tiny carnivorous plant known as bladderwort, belonging to the Utricularia genus. Despite their small size, these plants are of considerable interest to botanical enthusiasts. Various wildflowers bloom in sandstone woodland between October and late November. The species Utricularia minutissima, locally known as Thip Kesorn, is also recorded in the Phu Kradueng and Phu Luang areas. Early November offers a better opportunity to spot these plants before their flowering season ends.
However, visitors hoping to see Thailand’s famous Siam tulips should plan their trips for the rainy season rather than winter. In Chaiyaphum province, the flowering season generally runs from late June to early August. November visitors are therefore more likely to enjoy orchids, water lilies and bladderworts.
A few practical considerations can help travellers make the most of their visit. November mornings are generally cool, although afternoons can remain warm, so carrying light layers of clothing is advisable. Hiring a car or a vehicle with a driver is recommended for trips to Phu Phra Bat and the Red Lotus Sea, as public transport connections are limited. Visitors should also check the organisers’ official channels for the latest information on expo tickets, opening hours and entry arrangements.
Overall, the Udon Thani International Horticultural Expo promises to be more than a flower and plant exhibition. It offers an opportunity to showcase the natural beauty, cultural heritage, history and tourism potential of Thailand’s northeastern region. With the event running from November through March, visitors can combine their expo experience with trips to several remarkable destinations across Isan. Those wishing to witness the spectacular pink water lilies of the Red Lotus Sea should particularly consider planning their visit between mid-January and mid-February.
