ATSPB Holds Cybersecurity Workshop for Tourism Industry in Kolkata, Warns Travel Businesses Against Rising Online Fraud
By Aniruddha Pal, Sangbad Prabhakar Times
SPT NEWS, KOLKATA: The Association of Tourism Service Providers of Bengal (ATSPB), one of West Bengal’s largest organisations representing travel and tourism service providers, has organised a special workshop on cyber security in tourism, bringing together travel professionals to address the growing threat of online fraud in the industry.
The workshop, held in Kolkata with the support of the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, Regional Office, Kolkata, focused on practical ways for travel businesses and their customers to identify, prevent and respond to cybercrime.
The programme assumed particular significance as tourism businesses increasingly depend on digital platforms for hotel bookings, payments, customer communication, travel documentation and marketing.
The main session, titled “Cyber Security on Tourism,” was conducted by Madhurya Bhattacharya, a cybercrime officer from Lalbazar Cyber Police Station, with assistance from Sanjib Chakraborty. Bhattacharya explained major forms of cyber fraud through real-world examples and highlighted the mistakes that often make individuals and businesses vulnerable to criminals.
Her central message was simple: while technology has not yet been able to eliminate cybercrime completely, greater awareness and caution can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim.
The session covered several emerging forms of cybercrime, including fake loan applications, social media-related fraud, investment scams, so-called digital arrests and video-call fraud.
Bhattacharya warned participants against downloading or using unverified loan applications, saying such platforms can expose users to financial loss, harassment and misuse of personal information. In some cases, victims may even find their bank accounts frozen in connection with cybercrime investigations.
She advised anyone facing such a situation to immediately report the matter by calling 1930, the national cybercrime helpline, and obtain the relevant acknowledgement details. Victims should also establish which police station or investigating authority initiated any account freeze before pursuing further action.
The cyber officer also cautioned travel businesses and consumers against shopping through suspicious advertisements and sponsored links appearing on social media platforms.
Hotel and homestay bookings were another major area of concern. Bhattacharya advised participants to make payments only through the authorised payment gateway or booking channel of a verified platform. Customers should not transfer money to unrelated bank accounts simply because someone claiming to represent a hotel or homestay asks them to do so.
She also warned about fake customer-care and helpline numbers circulating online and urged users to verify contact details before making payments or sharing personal information.
A particularly important part of the session dealt with “digital arrest” scams.
Bhattacharya made it clear that there is no such legal procedure as a “digital arrest.” Criminals often use the identities of police officers or officials of government agencies during video calls to intimidate victims and demand money. Participants were urged not to comply with such threats or transfer funds under pressure.
Online vehicle challan fraud was also discussed. Bhattacharya recommended using the mParivahan platform to verify vehicle-related challans rather than relying on suspicious links or messages received from unknown sources.
She further advised participants to secure their Aadhaar information by enabling a biometric lock, helping prevent unauthorised biometric authentication.
Another warning concerned suspicious call-forwarding requests involving codes such as *21*. Users were advised not to follow instructions from unknown callers asking them to dial such codes.
Participants were also encouraged to use the Sanchar Saathi platform to check mobile connections registered in their names and deactivate numbers they no longer use.
The workshop also included a dedicated session on travel insurance, where Uttaran Das shared practical advice with ATSPB members on insurance-related matters relevant to the travel trade.
ATSPB General Secretary Swarup Bhattacharya said the association wanted its members to remain updated not only on business opportunities but also on issues that directly affect the security and sustainability of their businesses.
“We want our members to remain up to date in every important area, particularly cybersecurity and travel insurance,” he said.
The programme also addressed regulatory and professional requirements for tourism businesses. Swarup Bhattacharya spoke about the process of registration with the West Bengal Tourism Department, while Sanjib Deb Chowdhury, Tourist Officer of the Ministry of Tourism in Kolkata, explained the requirements for obtaining recognition under the ministry’s NIDHI initiative.
The presence of senior officials from the Ministry of Tourism added further significance to the programme. The participating members were presented with certificates bearing the signature of the Regional Director of the ministry’s eastern regional office.
Madhurya Bhattacharya, Sanjib Chakraborty, Uttaran Das and Sanjib Deb Chowdhury were also felicitated during the programme with traditional uttariyas.
While the Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI) has previously conducted cybersecurity workshops, ATSPB’s initiative marks a significant effort by a West Bengal-based tourism association to place cyber safety at the centre of its engagement with travel businesses.
For an industry that increasingly operates through digital payments, online bookings, social media and electronic communication, the workshop delivered a timely message: cybersecurity is no longer only a technology issue—it is an essential part of running a safe and responsible tourism business.
