এসপিটি নিউজ : ভারত ও যুক্তরাজ্যের মধ্যে দীর্ঘ প্রতীক্ষিত UK–India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে ১৫ জুলাই থেকে কার্যকর হয়েছে। আধুনিক সময়ের অন্যতম বৃহৎ এই মুক্ত বাণিজ্য চুক্তিকে দুই দেশের অর্থনৈতিক সম্পর্কের ইতিহাসে এক যুগান্তকারী পদক্ষেপ হিসেবে দেখা হচ্ছে। এর ফলে দুই দেশের ব্যবসা, বিনিয়োগ, পর্যটন এবং বাণিজ্যিক সহযোগিতা আরও শক্তিশালী হবে বলে আশা করা হচ্ছে।
২০২৫ সালে ভারত-যুক্তরাজ্যের দ্বিপাক্ষিক বাণিজ্যের পরিমাণ ছিল প্রায় ৪৮ বিলিয়ন পাউন্ড। নতুন এই চুক্তি কার্যকর হওয়ার ফলে দুই দেশের ব্যবসায়ী ও সাধারণ ভোক্তারা এখন থেকে আরও কম খরচে, দ্রুত এবং সহজে একে অপরের দেশের বিভিন্ন পণ্য ও পরিষেবা গ্রহণের সুযোগ পাবেন।
চুক্তি কার্যকর হওয়ার দিনটিকে স্মরণীয় করে রাখতে মুম্বইয়ে ব্রিটিশ ডেপুটি হাই কমিশনে ব্রিটিশ এয়ারওয়েজের একটি ফ্লাইটে যুক্তরাজ্য থেকে বিশেষভাবে পাঠানো হয় নির্বাচিত কিছু ব্রিটিশ পণ্য। ব্রিটিশ সরকারের দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার ট্রেড কমিশনার ও পশ্চিম ভারতের ব্রিটিশ ডেপুটি হাই কমিশনার হারজিন্দর কাং এবং ভারতে ব্রিটিশ এয়ারওয়েজের জেনারেল ম্যানেজার ডেভিড রাইট যৌথভাবে সেই বিশেষ প্যাকেজের উদ্বোধন করেন।
প্যাকেজে ছিল এমন সব ব্রিটিশ পণ্য, যেগুলি নতুন চুক্তির ফলে কম শুল্কের সুবিধা পাবে। এর মধ্যে ছিল প্রসাধনী, বিভিন্ন খাদ্যপণ্য এবং অ্যালকোহলজাত পানীয়।
হারজিন্দর কাং বলেন, “যুক্তরাজ্য ও ভারতের অংশীদারিত্বের ক্ষেত্রে এটি একটি ঐতিহাসিক মুহূর্ত। এই চুক্তির ফলে প্রথম দিন থেকেই ব্যবসা ও ভোক্তারা সস্তায়, দ্রুত এবং সহজে বাণিজ্যের সুবিধা পাবেন। এই নতুন সম্ভাবনাকে কাজে লাগাতে আমরা অত্যন্ত উৎসাহিত।”
অন্যদিকে ডেভিড রাইট বলেন, “ভারত ব্রিটিশ এয়ারওয়েজের অন্যতম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বাজার। বর্তমানে প্রতি সপ্তাহে ৬৩টি ফ্লাইট পরিচালিত হচ্ছে, যা গ্রীষ্মের শেষে বেড়ে ৭০টিতে পৌঁছাবে। এই মুক্ত বাণিজ্য চুক্তি দুই দেশের মধ্যে বাণিজ্য, বিনিয়োগ ও পর্যটনের নতুন সম্ভাবনার দ্বার খুলে দিয়েছে।”
নতুন এই চুক্তির আওতায় ভারত থেকে যুক্তরাজ্যে রপ্তানি হওয়া ৯৯ শতাংশ পণ্য এবং যুক্তরাজ্য থেকে ভারতে আসা ৯০ শতাংশ পণ্য হয় সম্পূর্ণ শুল্কমুক্ত হবে, নয়তো উল্লেখযোগ্যভাবে শুল্ক হ্রাস পাবে।
এর সুফল সবচেয়ে বেশি পাবে অটোমোবাইল, উৎপাদন শিল্প, ভোগ্যপণ্য, সৃজনশীল শিল্প, চিকিৎসা প্রযুক্তি-সহ একাধিক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ খাত। পাশাপাশি ক্ষুদ্র ও মাঝারি শিল্পের জন্যও নতুন আন্তর্জাতিক বাজারে প্রবেশের সুযোগ তৈরি হবে।
চুক্তি কার্যকর হওয়ার উপলক্ষে ভারত ও যুক্তরাজ্যের বিভিন্ন শহরে একাধিক বিশেষ কর্মসূচির আয়োজন করা হয়েছে। নয়াদিল্লি, মুম্বই, বেঙ্গালুরু এবং লন্ডনের ল্যাঙ্কাস্টার হাউসে অনুষ্ঠিত হবে ব্যবসায়িক সংবর্ধনা ও বিশেষ অনুষ্ঠান, যেখানে দুই দেশের শিল্পপতি, বিনিয়োগকারী ও নীতিনির্ধারকেরা অংশ নেবেন।
বিশেষজ্ঞদের মতে, দীর্ঘমেয়াদে এই মুক্ত বাণিজ্য চুক্তির ফলে দ্বিপাক্ষিক বাণিজ্য বছরে প্রায় ২৫.৫ বিলিয়ন পাউন্ড বৃদ্ধি পাবে। একই সঙ্গে ভারতের জিডিপি বছরে ৫.১ বিলিয়ন পাউন্ড এবং যুক্তরাজ্যের জিডিপি ৪.৮ বিলিয়ন পাউন্ড পর্যন্ত বাড়তে পারে বলে অনুমান করা হচ্ছে।
পর্যটন শিল্পের ক্ষেত্রেও এই চুক্তি নতুন সম্ভাবনার বার্তা নিয়ে এসেছে। সহজতর বাণিজ্যিক সম্পর্ক, ব্যবসায়িক সফর বৃদ্ধি এবং বিনিয়োগের প্রসারের ফলে ভারত ও যুক্তরাজ্যের মধ্যে পর্যটক ও ব্যবসায়িক ভ্রমণকারীর সংখ্যা উল্লেখযোগ্যভাবে বাড়বে বলে মনে করছেন সংশ্লিষ্ট মহল। ফলে দুই দেশের অর্থনৈতিক সম্পর্কের পাশাপাশি পর্যটন ও সাংস্কৃতিক বিনিময়ও নতুন উচ্চতায় পৌঁছাবে বলে আশা করা হচ্ছে।

Historic UK-India Free Trade Agreement Comes Into Force, Opening New Era for Trade and Investment

KOLKATA/NEW DELHI, July 16 (SPT) — The landmark United Kingdom–India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) officially entered into force on Tuesday, marking one of the most significant milestones in bilateral economic relations between the two countries and paving the way for expanded trade, investment and tourism.
The agreement, regarded as one of the UK’s most ambitious trade deals in recent years, is expected to provide immediate benefits to businesses and consumers by lowering tariffs, simplifying market access and strengthening supply chains across multiple sectors.
According to the UK Government, bilateral trade between the United Kingdom and India reached £48 billion in 2025. Officials expect the new agreement to accelerate commercial activity by making the movement of goods and services faster, cheaper and more efficient.
To commemorate the implementation of the agreement, a special consignment of British products arrived at the British Deputy High Commission in Mumbai aboard a British Airways flight on Tuesday morning. The shipment, containing British cosmetics, food products and alcoholic beverages benefiting from reduced import tariffs, was unveiled by Harjinder Kang, His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for South Asia and British Deputy High Commissioner for Western India, alongside David Wright, British Airways’ General Manager in India.
“This is a watershed moment for the UK-India partnership,” Kang said in a statement. “Our landmark trade deal is designed to benefit businesses and consumers from day one through cheaper, quicker and easier trade.”
British Airways, one of the largest international carriers operating between the two countries, welcomed the agreement, describing it as a major step in strengthening economic ties.
“India is one of British Airways’ most important markets,” Wright said. “The UK-India Free Trade Agreement reinforces the long-term potential of one of the world’s most dynamic international corridors. We are proud to support this landmark agreement and the opportunities it will create for trade, investment and tourism.”
The airline currently operates 63 weekly flights between the UK and India and plans to increase that number to 70 flights per week by the end of the summer season.
Under the agreement, 99% of Indian exports entering the UK will benefit from duty-free access, while 90% of UK exports to India will either become duty-free or receive substantial tariff reductions.
The tariff liberalisation is expected to benefit a broad range of industries, including automotive manufacturing, consumer goods, advanced manufacturing, creative industries and medical technology, while improving opportunities for businesses in both markets.
To mark the implementation of the agreement, the UK Government is hosting a series of business and trade events in New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Lancaster House in London, bringing together policymakers, investors and industry leaders to explore new commercial opportunities.
Over the longer term, the UK Government estimates that the agreement will increase bilateral trade by £25.5 billion annually, while contributing approximately £5.1 billion to India’s GDP and £4.8 billion to the UK’s GDP each year.
Trade analysts also expect the agreement to strengthen business travel, tourism and people-to-people exchanges, reflecting the growing strategic and economic partnership between two of the world’s largest economies.
