দেশের ক্রুজ কার্যক্রম মূলত কয়েকটি বড় উপকূলীয় শহরকে কেন্দ্র করে গড়ে উঠেছে, যার মধ্যে মুম্বই সবচেয়ে বড় কেন্দ্র হিসেবে উঠে এসেছে। পাশাপাশি গোয়া, কোচি এব্বং চেন্নাই-ও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করছে। এর মধ্যে মুম্বই বন্দরই সবচেয়ে বেশি ক্রুজ জাহাজ ও যাত্রী হ্যান্ডেল করে, ফলে এটিকে ভারতের প্রধান ক্রুজ গেটওয়ে বলা হয়। ভৌগোলিক দিক থেকেও ভারতের সম্ভাবনা অত্যন্ত শক্তিশালী, কারণ প্রায় ৭,৫০০ কিলোমিটার দীর্ঘ উপকূলরেখা, ২০০-র বেশি বন্দর, ১,৩০০-রও বেশি দ্বীপ এবং বিস্তৃত নদীপথ এই খাতকে এগিয়ে নিয়ে যাওয়ার জন্য বড় সুবিধা তৈরি করেছে। সেই সঙ্গে সরকার ২০৪১ সালের মধ্যে প্রায় ৪০ লক্ষ ক্রুজ পর্যটক আকর্ষণের লক্ষ্য নিয়েছে, যা এই খাতের ভবিষ্যৎ সম্ভাবনাকে আরও জোরালো করে।

পর্যটকদের আগ্রহের ক্ষেত্রেও বড় পরিবর্তন দেখা যাচ্ছে। আগে যেখানে ক্রুজ ভ্রমণ মূলত উচ্চবিত্তদের মধ্যে সীমাবদ্ধ ছিল, এখন মধ্যবিত্ত শ্রেণির মধ্যেও এর চাহিদা বাড়ছে। বর্তমানে প্রায় ৮০ শতাংশ যাত্রীই দেশীয় পর্যটক, যা এই সেক্টরের বিস্তারের একটি বড় ইঙ্গিত। একই সফরে একাধিক গন্তব্য ঘোরা, বিলাসবহুল সুবিধা এবং তুলনামূলক কম ভিসা জটিলতা—এই সব কারণ ক্রুজ ভ্রমণকে আরও আকর্ষণীয় করে তুলছে। এর পাশাপাশি অভিজ্ঞতাভিত্তিক ভ্রমণের প্রবণতা ক্রুজ ট্যুরিজমকে আরও জনপ্রিয় করে তুলছে।

অর্থনৈতিক দিক থেকেও এই খাতের গুরুত্ব ক্রমশ বাড়ছে। ক্রুজ ট্যুরিজমের ফলে স্থানীয় ব্যবসা, হোটেল শিল্প, পরিবহন ব্যবস্থা এবং ছোট শহরগুলির অর্থনীতি চাঙা হচ্ছে। কর্মসংস্থানের নতুন সুযোগ তৈরি হচ্ছে এবং বৈদেশিক মুদ্রা অর্জনের সম্ভাবনাও বাড়ছে। তবে এই সম্ভাবনার পাশাপাশি কিছু চ্যালেঞ্জও রয়েছে, যেমন আন্তর্জাতিক মানের পর্যাপ্ত বন্দরের অভাব, তুলনামূলক বেশি খরচ, সাধারণ মানুষের মধ্যে সচেতনতার ঘাটতি এবং পরিবেশগত উদ্বেগ। তবুও বিশেষজ্ঞদের মতে, অবকাঠামো উন্নয়ন ও নীতিগত সহায়তা অব্যাহত থাকলে ভারত খুব দ্রুত এশিয়ার অন্যতম বড় ক্রুজ হাবে পরিণত হতে পারে।

সব মিলিয়ে, ভারতে ক্রুজ ট্যুরিজম এখনো বিকাশের পর্যায়ে থাকলেও এর গতি অত্যন্ত দ্রুত এবং সম্ভাবনা ব্যাপক। সমুদ্রপথে ভ্রমণ আর শুধুই বিলাসিতা নয়, এটি ধীরে ধীরে ভারতের পর্যটন শিল্পের ভবিষ্যৎ হয়ে উঠছে।

SPT News: India’s tourism landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, with cruise tourism emerging as one of the fastest-growing segments in the industry. Once considered a luxury reserved for elite travelers, cruise travel is now steadily gaining popularity among a wider audience, including the middle class. Backed by policy support, infrastructure development, and improved global connectivity, the Government of India is actively pushing this sector toward rapid expansion.

Recent data highlights the strong upward trend. Over 100 cruise ships operate through Indian ports annually, and in the 2023–24 financial year alone, approximately 470,000 passengers traveled via cruise routes. This marks a sharp increase compared to previous years, reflecting growing demand and rising awareness among travelers. Over the past decade, cruise passenger numbers in India have multiplied several times, signaling a clear shift in travel preferences.

At present, cruise operations in India are concentrated around a few major coastal hubs. Mumbai stands out as the country’s largest cruise gateway, handling the highest volume of ships and passengers. Other important ports include Goa, Kochi, and Chennai, all of which are witnessing steady growth in cruise activity. India’s geographical advantage further strengthens its position, with a coastline stretching over 7,500 kilometers, more than 200 ports, over 1,300 islands, and extensive inland waterways.

The potential of cruise tourism in India is immense. The government has set ambitious targets, aiming to attract around 4 million cruise tourists by 2041. This vision is supported by initiatives such as port modernization, the development of dedicated cruise terminals, and the expansion of e-Visa entry points, all designed to make travel smoother for international visitors.

Another notable shift is in traveler behavior. Cruise tourism is no longer limited to high-income groups. A growing number of domestic travelers are now opting for cruise experiences, accounting for nearly 80 percent of total passengers. The appeal lies in the all-in-one travel experience—luxury accommodation, entertainment, dining, and the opportunity to visit multiple destinations within a single trip, often with fewer visa complications.

Economically, the sector holds substantial promise. Cruise tourism contributes to local economies by boosting demand for hospitality, transport, retail, and tour services. It also generates employment and increases foreign exchange earnings, particularly in coastal regions that are still developing as tourism destinations.

However, challenges remain. Limited world-class port infrastructure, relatively high costs, low awareness among mass travelers, and environmental concerns such as marine pollution continue to pose obstacles. Addressing these issues will be critical to sustaining long-term growth.

Despite these hurdles, industry experts remain optimistic. With continued investment, policy support, and global partnerships, India has the potential to emerge as a leading cruise tourism hub in Asia. As demand rises and infrastructure improves, cruise tourism could soon become a mainstream travel choice rather than a niche luxury.
