History, Heritage and Cleanliness: GTWA Marks World Tourism Day with a Social Mission

By Aniruddha Pal | Sangbad Prabhakar Times

SPT News | Kolkata, October 12: Tourism is not merely about travelling to new destinations or generating business. It is also about discovering history, appreciating cultural heritage and fulfilling social responsibilities. Embracing this broader vision, the Global Tourism Welfare Association (GTWA) marked World Tourism Day 2026 with a series of activities in Kolkata, in association with India Tourism under the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.

Observed globally on September 27, World Tourism Day provided an opportunity for the association to combine heritage education with environmental awareness. GTWA organised an educational visit to the historic Jorasanko Thakur Bari for school students and conducted a cleanliness drive on the road in front of the Victoria Memorial. The initiative highlighted the role tourism can play in preserving cultural heritage, promoting civic responsibility and contributing to social welfare.

Subhash Das, representing GTWA, said that introducing young students to Bengal’s rich history and cultural traditions was one of the key objectives of the initiative. During the visit to Jorasanko Thakur Bari, the students learnt about the history of the ancestral home of the Tagore family, its contribution to Bengal’s cultural development and its close association with Rabindranath Tagore. The association believes that experiencing historical places first-hand can help young people develop a deeper understanding of their cultural roots and heritage.

Jorasanko Thakur Bari holds a special place in the cultural history of Bengal. It emerged as one of the important centres of the Bengal Renaissance during the nineteenth century, with the Tagore family making significant contributions to literature, music, art, education and social reform. Rabindranath Tagore, the Nobel Prize-winning poet, was born here on May 7, 1861. His childhood, intellectual development and creative journey were closely connected with the cultural environment of the family home.

Tagore’s literary works, songs, philosophy and ideas eventually reached audiences across the world, establishing him as one of the most influential cultural figures of modern India. Today, Jorasanko Thakur Bari remains an important heritage destination associated with Rabindranath Tagore and the Tagore family. Its connection with Rabindra Bharati University further strengthens its place in Bengal’s educational and cultural landscape. The site attracts visitors interested in literature, history, architecture and the intellectual movements that shaped modern Bengal.

Promoting such heritage destinations among younger generations can help strengthen cultural awareness while encouraging the conservation of historically significant places. It also demonstrates how tourism can serve as a bridge between education, cultural preservation and economic opportunity.

Alongside the heritage visit, GTWA organised a cleanliness drive on the road in front of Victoria Memorial, one of Kolkata’s most recognisable landmarks. Through the initiative, the association sought to underline that maintaining clean and welcoming tourist destinations is a shared responsibility involving public authorities, local communities, visitors and tourism industry stakeholders.

Kolkata offers a diverse range of attractions, including Victoria Memorial, Jorasanko Thakur Bari, the Indian Museum, Dakshineswar Kali Temple and numerous historic buildings. Maintaining these sites, improving visitor awareness and providing reliable information can contribute to a better tourism experience and strengthen the city’s appeal to domestic and international travellers.

Beyond Kolkata, West Bengal has considerable tourism potential across several categories. Darjeeling and the Dooars attract visitors with their mountain landscapes, forests and wildlife. The Sundarbans offer a distinctive mangrove ecosystem, while Purulia’s Ayodhya Hills, the terracotta temples of Bishnupur, the historic architecture of Murshidabad and the cultural heritage of Santiniketan provide opportunities for nature-based, heritage, rural and cultural tourism.

A more coordinated approach to developing these destinations could create employment opportunities, support local businesses and generate additional income for communities. However, sustainable tourism growth requires more than destination promotion or an increase in visitor numbers. Clean surroundings, convenient transport, trained guides, accurate information, local participation and heritage conservation are equally important to the long-term success of a destination.

Das said GTWA was established earlier this year, bringing together travel agency owners and tour operators with the aim of encouraging cooperation within the tourism industry. According to him, several travel agencies and tour operators have already expressed interest in joining the association, and its membership is gradually increasing.

He emphasised that GTWA’s objectives extend beyond the commercial interests of the tourism sector.

“Our aim is not limited to promoting tourism as a business. We want to connect tourism with social responsibility and welfare activities. That is why we organised the heritage visit for school students and the cleanliness drive in Kolkata on World Tourism Day. We wanted to familiarise the younger generation with Bengal’s history, culture and heritage while also encouraging greater public awareness about cleanliness. We believe tourism becomes truly meaningful when it promotes awareness, helps preserve heritage and contributes to the welfare of society. We plan to continue such public welfare initiatives alongside our efforts to support tourism development,” Das said.

GTWA’s World Tourism Day activities reflect an approach that places people, heritage and civic responsibility alongside the commercial aspects of travel. By introducing students to the legacy of Rabindranath Tagore and encouraging cleanliness around a major tourist landmark, the association sought to highlight tourism’s wider social value.

For West Bengal, where historical landmarks, cultural traditions, natural landscapes and local communities offer a wide range of tourism experiences, such initiatives can help build a more responsible and sustainable tourism culture. When tourism encourages people to understand their history, respect their surroundings and supports local livelihoods, it can become an important contributor to inclusive regional development.
