BRPA Targets Committees at 100 Railway Stations in Bengal

SPT NEWS, Kolkata, 11 October: The Bengal Railway Passengers Association (BRPA) is expanding its network across West Bengal, with plans to establish committees at 100 railway stations to strengthen passenger safety, improve station facilities and address the problems faced by commuters. The association announced its priorities at a general meeting held on Sunday, October 11, at a special room near Belgharia railway station.

The meeting focused on two main agenda items: the formation of new station committees and preparations for the association’s Bijoya Sammilani, scheduled for November 1. However, discussions also covered several pressing issues concerning railway passenger safety, station infrastructure and the need for better coordination with railway authorities.

BRPA president Shankar, popularly known as Bappa Shil, highlighted the association’s role in raising passenger-related demands, including the introduction of 12-coach local trains across the Sealdah Main, North and South sections. He said the association had also held a meeting with the General Manager of Eastern Railway on the issue and retained a copy of the document submitted to the railway authorities.

According to Shil, West Bengal has 234 railway stations, and the association’s immediate priority is to establish committees at 100 of them. These committees will focus on identifying passenger grievances, raising safety concerns and pursuing practical solutions. The association has already expanded its activities across North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah and Hooghly districts, with new committees formed at several stations.

Founded in 2024, the BRPA aims to improve passenger safety and railway station facilities through organised public representation. At Sunday’s meeting, Badal Parbat and Gopal Talukdar were inducted into the association’s central committee, taking its total membership to 22.

Association vice-president and advocate Ashok Chakraborty explained the organisation’s objectives and activities, highlighting the work of the Barrackpore committee. He emphasised that members were driven by a sense of commitment rather than professional interests.

“We are involved in this association not as a profession, but out of passion. We do this because we care about the organisation and want to stand beside railway passengers,” he said, comparing the commitment to people who nurture plants at home despite their own difficulties.

General secretary Ranjit Sarkar said the association had identified 11 demands concerning railway passengers. He stressed the need to move beyond indoor meetings and organise programmes at railway stations and nearby areas to make commuters aware of the association’s work.

He said media coverage could help communicate passenger concerns across Bengal and make people aware that an organisation was actively working to protect their interests.

Sarkar also highlighted unresolved problems at Belgharia station. According to him, water had been leaking through the roof of the toilet on Platform 4, and the issue had been brought to the attention of railway officials. The association had also demanded a new toilet facility on Platform 1.

He alleged that the railway authorities had initially sought 21 days to address the matter, but more than two months had passed without a solution. He further said the association had not received permission to hold a meeting with passengers at Belgharia station.

Sarkar proposed writing to the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) to seek permission for such meetings and press for action on outstanding passenger grievances.

The condition of Sodepur station was another major concern. President Shil said the subway at the station was in poor condition, with water leaking from above during the monsoon. He warned that the situation required urgent repairs to prevent a possible accident.

He also called for escalators and lifts at Sodepur, one of the busy stations in the region, to make commuting easier for elderly passengers and people with mobility difficulties.

Senior journalist Aniruddha Pal, a resident of Naihati, drew attention to several passenger-related problems at Naihati station. He pointed out that passengers using Platform 6 had to depend on a single foot overbridge towards Sealdah, while another foot overbridge constructed towards the Krishnanagar side had yet to be opened, causing inconvenience to commuters.

Pal also highlighted the difficulty of boarding and alighting from trains because of the low height of Platforms 2, 3 and 6, particularly for elderly passengers.

He further said that electronic display boards on Platforms 2 and 5 did not consistently show train and coach numbers correctly when long-distance trains arrived. This created confusion among passengers trying to locate their designated coaches.

Pal stressed the need for the association to meet station officials and senior railway authorities, submit specific demands and seek clear commitments for resolving these problems.

Association member Rajesh De, who attended the meeting from Howrah, called for greater accountability within the organisation. He said membership should be based on active participation and that those who held positions without contributing to the association’s work should not remain in the organisation.

The meeting concluded with discussions on a range of passenger safety, infrastructure and service-related concerns across Bengal’s railway network. The association reiterated its intention to expand its presence and pursue solutions to commuters’ problems through organised representation.

With its target of establishing committees at 100 stations, the BRPA is seeking to strengthen its role as a platform for railway passengers. The effectiveness of the initiative will ultimately depend on how consistently the association follows up its demands and how far the railway authorities act on the concerns raised.

For millions of daily commuters, safer stations, functional toilets, accessible foot overbridges, reliable information systems and better boarding facilities remain essential. The association’s expanding activities could provide a stronger collective voice for passengers, provided that discussions are translated into concrete improvements on the ground.
