Madhya Pradesh Plans Three Craft Handloom Tourism Villages, Sets National Model
SPT NEWS, Bhopal, August 10, 2026: Madhya Pradesh is developing a distinctive tourism model by linking its centuries-old handloom traditions with rural tourism, with the state set to become the first in India to establish three Craft Handloom Tourism Villages.
The initiative builds on the success of Pranpur, located around 3-4 kilometres from Chanderi, which has been recognised as India’s first Craft Handloom Tourism Village. Known for its traditional weaving community and globally recognised Chanderi textiles, Pranpur received the Ministry of Tourism’s Best Tourism Village Award in 2024.
Inspired by the village’s success, the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board is developing two more craft-focused tourism villages. Keriyakhedi, near Maheshwar, is being developed around the traditional Maheshwari weaving industry, while Kukshi in Dhar district will focus on the renowned Bagh print craft.
The initiative is expected to make Madhya Pradesh the only Indian state with three Craft Handloom Tourism Villages. The model has also received appreciation from the Ministry of Textiles, which has encouraged other states to consider similar initiatives.
The programme places local artisans at the centre of tourism development, with an emphasis on sustainable livelihoods and ensuring that a greater share of tourism-related economic benefits reaches rural communities.
Pranpur is home to around 450 weaving families who have preserved the tradition of producing Chanderi textiles on traditional pit looms for generations. In Keriyakhedi, the handloom sector supports around 125 weavers from approximately 60-70 families.
Women are also playing a significant role across the production chain, from yarn preparation and dyeing to weaving, designing and finishing. Their participation has strengthened the social and economic base of the traditional weaving sector.
Maheshwar, already an important religious tourism destination, is increasingly emerging as a centre for textile tourism. A Textile Tourism Village is being developed there at an estimated cost of ₹5.11 crore with support from the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department and the Ministry of Textiles.
The project includes plans for 10 homestays, a modern cafeteria, trekking trails and improved riverfront and ghat facilities. Visitors will be able to observe the traditional weaving process and purchase Maheshwari textiles directly from artisans. The village currently has around 125 handlooms.
Local markets in Chanderi and Maheshwar are also becoming important cultural tourism attractions. Direct sales to visitors help artisans secure better prices, reduce dependence on intermediaries and strengthen the local rural economy.
The approach reflects the broader principles of responsible tourism by combining cultural preservation with community-based economic development. It also gives fresh momentum to the “Vocal for Local” campaign by connecting traditional handmade products directly with domestic and international visitors.
On National Handloom Day, observed on August 7, Madhya Pradesh’s initiative highlights how handloom heritage can serve not only as a symbol of cultural identity but also as a foundation for rural employment, sustainable tourism and local economic growth.
