এসপিটি নিউজ, কলকাতা, ১৭ অক্টোবর: দুর্গাপুজোর আনন্দের মধ্যেই উত্তর কলকাতার চোরবাগান সর্বজনীন দুর্গাপুজো মণ্ডপে নেমে এল গভীর শোক। শনিবার সন্ধ্যায় প্রবল বৃষ্টি ও অতিরিক্ত ভিড়ের মধ্যে পদপিষ্ট হওয়ার ঘটনায় অন্তত ১৭ জনের মৃত্যু হয়েছে বলে বিভিন্ন সংবাদমাধ্যমের প্রতিবেদনে জানানো হয়েছে। আহত হয়েছেন বহু দর্শনার্থী। তাঁদের কলকাতা মেডিক্যাল কলেজ ও হাসপাতালে নিয়ে গিয়ে চিকিৎসার ব্যবস্থা করা হয়। এই মর্মান্তিক ঘটনায় গোটা শহরে শোকের পরিবেশ তৈরি হয়েছে।

17 Dead in Stampede at North Kolkata Durga Puja Pandal; Heavy Rain and Crowd Surge Trigger Chaos

KOLKATA, October 17, 2026: At least 17 people died in a stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata on Saturday evening, turning the festive atmosphere into one of grief and shock. Several others were injured as heavy rain and a sudden surge of visitors triggered chaos at the venue.
According to police information reported by the media, the incident occurred at around 7:40 pm near the exit gate of the Sarada Park (Chor Bagan) Puja pandal, under Girish Park police station. As rain began, a large crowd gathered around the venue, and people waiting outside reportedly rushed forward. Several people fell amid the crowd surge, leading to a stampede-like situation.
The injured were rushed to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Police reports indicated that approximately 35 people had been taken to the hospital, although earlier reports cited at least 25 injured. The precise number of injured and their medical conditions require confirmation through the latest official updates.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Chief Secretary Manoj Agarwal and senior officials reached the hospital to assess the situation and review the medical arrangements. Police and disaster management personnel were deployed at the site, and the pandal was closed to visitors following the incident.
The tragedy prompted an outpouring of grief from political leaders. Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock and offered prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured. Other political leaders also conveyed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced financial assistance of ₹2 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased person and ₹50,000 for each injured person from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund, according to media reports.
The incident has raised serious questions about crowd management, emergency access and public safety at major festival venues. The sudden change in weather, the concentration of visitors and the movement of people around the entrance and exit areas are among the circumstances being examined.
