Global Travel Mart 2026 Opens in Kolkata, Highlighting New Opportunities for West Bengal Tourism

✍️ Aniruddha Pal | Sangbad Prabhakar Times

Spt NEWS, KOLKATA, 8 Aug: The third edition of the Global Travel Mart (GTM) 2026 opened in Kolkata on Friday, bringing together travel agents, tour operators, hoteliers, homestay owners and tourism stakeholders from across India as West Bengal seeks to expand its presence on the country’s tourism map.

The three-day travel trade event, organised by the Tour Operators Welfare Association (TOWA), concludes on Sunday. The event has drawn participants from several states, including Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, Odisha and Jharkhand, along with tourism businesses from West Bengal.

The fair was inaugurated by Purnima Chakraborty, West Bengal’s Minister of State for Tourism and Information & Cultural Affairs. Addressing the opening ceremony, Chakraborty said the state’s tourism sector was entering a period of strong opportunity and that new initiatives under Tourism Minister Dr. Shankar Ghosh were expected to create further scope for growth.

She said the state tourism department had already taken several decisions aimed at strengthening tourism and promoting West Bengal as a destination. Tourism fairs such as GTM, she added, were helping communicate a more organised and positive message about the state’s tourism potential to travellers.

TOWA President Madan Agarwal said the growing participation of tourism businesses and other stakeholders showed that GTM had gained recognition within the travel trade.

Agarwal said TOWA had organised two previous editions of the event but had not earlier received direct participation from the West Bengal government. This year, however, the state tourism department has extended significant support and, for the first time in GTM’s three-year history, has set up its own pavilion at the event.

He described the development as a significant boost for the organisers and the wider tourism industry, saying it had helped create renewed confidence among tourism businesses that West Bengal could compete more strongly as a tourism destination.

The participation extends beyond West Bengal. Travel agents and tourism businesses from the northern states and union territories, including Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir, are taking part, while tourism operators, hoteliers and other stakeholders from Kerala, Odisha and Jharkhand are also represented. Homestay operators have joined the event to promote smaller and emerging destinations.

TOWA Vice President Biswajit Karmakar, one of the key people behind the event, also welcomed the increased involvement of the state tourism department.

Karmakar said the department’s more visible participation in tourism fairs and events had generated renewed confidence among tourism businesses. He credited the state government and Tourism Minister Dr. Shankar Ghosh for giving greater attention to the sector.

A major feature of GTM 2026 is the West Bengal Tourism Department’s pavilion, which showcases destinations and tourism experiences from across the state.

The pavilion presents a broad tourism portfolio covering North Bengal and South Bengal, eastern and western regions, Gaur Bengal and Rarh Bengal, as well as rural tourism, religious tourism, heritage, ancient architecture, folk culture and Bengali cuisine.

Organisers said the aim was to present Bengal not only through its established destinations but also through its lesser-known locations, cultural heritage and emerging tourism experiences.

The event also features a lucky draw and special offers from participating tourism stakeholders. Tour operators, hotels and other businesses are showcasing travel packages and services aimed at travellers planning holidays in the coming months.

With the Durga Puja holiday season approaching, GTM 2026 is also being positioned as an important opportunity for travellers looking to finalise their holiday plans. Visitors can explore destinations, compare travel packages and connect directly with tourism businesses before the festive travel rush begins.

The organisers expect the event to strengthen business-to-business connections while giving West Bengal an opportunity to present its tourism potential to a wider national market.

For the state’s tourism industry, the third edition of GTM comes at a time when government participation and private-sector engagement are creating renewed expectations about the sector’s future. The organisers and participating stakeholders say the growing cooperation could help build a stronger tourism ecosystem in West Bengal and increase the state’s visibility among domestic travellers.
