Delhi–Guwahati Bullet Train: How Could It Transform Tourism in West Bengal?
SPT NEWS, KOLKATA: A proposed high-speed rail corridor connecting Delhi with Guwahati via West Bengal’s Siliguri could create new opportunities for rail connectivity and tourism across eastern and northeastern India. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on October 31 that the proposed high-speed rail corridor from Delhi to Guwahati had received approval, according to media reports. If implemented, the project could significantly improve connectivity between Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Assam.
The proposed route is expected to begin in Delhi and pass through Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Prayagraj and Patna before reaching Siliguri in West Bengal. The corridor would then extend towards Guwahati in Assam. This could bring North Bengal closer to the national capital and several major cities in northern India through faster rail connections.
Siliguri is particularly important to the proposed project because it serves as a gateway to Darjeeling, Kalimpong, the Dooars and Sikkim. Travellers from different parts of India frequently use the city as a starting point for road journeys to the hills, tea gardens, forests and other tourist destinations across the region. A high-speed rail connection with Delhi and northern India could make travel to North Bengal more convenient for tourists.
Darjeeling attracts visitors with its mountain scenery, tea gardens, heritage toy train and cultural attractions. The Dooars region, known for its forests, wildlife and tea estates, also has considerable tourism potential. If the proposed high-speed rail service becomes operational, travellers from Delhi and other northern Indian cities could reach Siliguri more quickly before continuing their journeys by road to these destinations.
However, the extent of any reduction in travel time will depend on the final route, station locations and operational schedule. Until these details are officially confirmed, it would be premature to estimate the overall journey time between Delhi and Guwahati.
The railway minister has cited projected journey times of around 59 minutes between Delhi and Agra, one hour and 45 minutes between Delhi and Kanpur, and two hours and 12 minutes between Delhi and Lucknow. The proposed journey time between Delhi and Varanasi is around three hours and 35 minutes. These are indicative figures associated with the proposed corridor, not schedules for an operational train. A final journey-time estimate for the complete Delhi–Guwahati route has not yet been confirmed.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has welcomed the proposed extension of the corridor to Guwahati. According to reports, the initial proposal envisaged extending the route to Siliguri, after which Sarma requested the railway minister to consider extending it to Guwahati. He has argued that improved rail connectivity could strengthen links between the Northeast and the rest of India while creating opportunities for business, industry and employment.
The potential impact on tourism is also significant. Faster and more convenient transport can improve access to destinations and encourage more people to travel. An increase in visitor numbers could benefit hotels, resorts, car rental operators, local guides, restaurants and travel agencies. Small tourism businesses in North Bengal could also gain access to a wider market if connectivity improves.
Better rail links could support business travel and tourism related to meetings, conferences and corporate events. Kolkata and Siliguri could benefit from increased demand for accommodation and related services if the proposed corridor encourages more visitors to the region. However, the scale of these benefits would depend on complementary investment in hotels, local transport, sanitation, visitor safety and destination management.
Several important details about the project remain unclear. A comprehensive route map, the final list of stations, the total project cost, the construction schedule and the expected date of commercial operations have yet to be established publicly in sufficient detail. An announcement or approval should not be interpreted as confirmation that construction has begun or that services will start by a particular date.
For West Bengal’s tourism industry, the proposed corridor represents a potentially important development. If Siliguri becomes a major high-speed rail gateway, destinations such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong and the Dooars could become more accessible to travellers from major Indian cities. The eventual impact, however, will depend on the project’s implementation, the final route and the development of supporting infrastructure.
