ATSPB to Mark World Tourism Day in Kolkata with Focus on AI and Digital Transformation
Panel at Kolkata Press Club to examine how artificial intelligence could reshape tourism; West Bengal Tourism Minister of State Purnima Chakraborty to attend as Chief Guest
✍️ By Aniruddha Pal । Sangbad Prabhakar Times
SPT NEWS, KOLKATA, Sept. 25, 2026: The Association of Tourism Service Providers of Bengal (ATSPB) will mark World Tourism Day in Kolkata with a panel discussion focusing on one of the most significant technological shifts facing the travel industry — the growing role of artificial intelligence and digital transformation.
The programme, scheduled for Sept. 27 at the Kolkata Press Club, will bring together tourism professionals, technology specialists and digital transformation experts to discuss how emerging technologies could influence travel planning, tourism businesses, destination management and the wider tourism ecosystem.
West Bengal Tourism Minister of State Purnima Chakraborty is scheduled to attend the programme as the chief guest. The state government’s official tourism department lists Chakraborty as Minister of State for Tourism.
The event is being organised with the support of India Tourism, Eastern Region, Kolkata, under the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.
The central theme of the programme — “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism” — reflects the growing international debate over the impact of artificial intelligence on the tourism industry. The theme is also being highlighted in World Tourism Day 2026 discussions internationally, with attention being given to areas including travel planning, destination management, sustainability, employment and the future of the tourism workforce.
AI takes centre stage
Unlike conventional tourism-day celebrations centred mainly on cultural or entertainment programmes, ATSPB has chosen to focus its principal programme on the future of the tourism industry.
The panel will examine how artificial intelligence is changing the way travellers discover destinations, plan journeys and access information, while also considering how tourism businesses and destinations may need to adapt.
The wider international discussion has also highlighted both opportunities and risks. AI-powered tools can personalise travel experiences and help tourism organisations make faster decisions, but concerns have also been raised over accuracy, bias, unequal access to technology and the possibility of smaller destinations being left behind.
Industry and technology experts to join panel
The keynote speaker will be Rimjhim Ray, an AI entrepreneur and angel investor. She is a co-founder of WaVoAI and AtlasAIX and has been associated with NASSCOM Insights and NITI Aayog in an advisory capacity, according to the organisers.
The discussion will be moderated by Abhijit Chatterjee, Senior Director – CIO & CISO at TCG Lifesciences Digital Leap.
The panel will also include:
- Abhishek Saha, Business Head, Digital Transformation Projects, Digital Aptech Pvt. Ltd.
- Narayan Sarkar, Travel and Technology Professional, Mettletech.
- Tirthankar Dey, Brand and Digital Marketing Consultant, DUNZ | Ocean6 Holidays.
The panel discussion is scheduled from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Kolkata Press Club.
Debate on AI and tourism
Before the panel discussion, ATSPB members will participate in a debate on the proposition: “Artificial intelligence in the tourism industry is a greater opportunity than a threat.”
The organisers said the debate has been included to encourage industry members to examine both the opportunities and challenges emerging from the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence.
ATSPB Joint Secretaries Swaroop Bhattacharya and Tarak Saha said the programme would bring together experienced tourism professionals and technology specialists to discuss digital transformation and the potential impact of artificial intelligence on the sector.
They said the objective was not simply to discuss technology but to encourage greater awareness among tourism professionals about how the industry may evolve in the coming years.
Preparing Bengal’s tourism industry for a digital future
ATSPB Vice-President and Adviser Samar Ghosh said the association has consistently worked with tourism businesses, both established and new, by providing advice and support.
He said the organisation had chosen to place artificial intelligence and digital transformation at the centre of its World Tourism Day programme because technology is increasingly becoming part of the way tourism businesses operate.
According to Ghosh, the discussion is intended to help association members understand emerging technologies and consider how their businesses can adapt to the changing tourism landscape.
The focus of the Kolkata programme comes at a time when international tourism bodies and industry organisations are increasingly examining the intersection of tourism, technology, sustainability and human skills. UN Tourism describes tourism as a driver of economic growth, inclusive development and environmental sustainability, while its current initiatives also emphasise innovation and digitalisation.
For Kolkata’s tourism industry, the ATSPB programme therefore seeks to place a local industry conversation within a much wider global debate: how can technology and artificial intelligence be used to redesign tourism while keeping travellers, tourism workers, local communities and destinations at the centre of the transformation?
