Call for Action on Passenger Safety as Bengal Railway Passengers’ Association Unites at Bijoya Sammilani
SPT NEWS, SODEPUR, 1 November : The Bengal Railway Passengers’ Association has pledged to work collectively for the safety and welfare of railway passengers, better services and the resolution of long-standing passenger grievances. The association held its 12th Bijoya Sammilani at Deshbandhu Vidyalaya in Sodepur on Sunday, bringing together people from different political backgrounds and linguistic communities around a common cause: improving railway services and protecting passenger interests.
The gathering carried particular significance as the association’s first Bijoya Sammilani following the change of government in West Bengal. However, the focus of the event extended beyond politics, with speakers emphasising the need for collective action to ensure passenger safety, improve railway infrastructure and hold the authorities accountable for service delivery.
Association president Shankar Shil described the gathering as an example of unity in diversity, saying that people from different linguistic communities and political parties had come together for a shared purpose. He said the event demonstrated how passenger welfare could transcend political differences and become a platform for constructive engagement.
One of the prominent participants was Paresh Nath Sarkar, a well-known social worker from Naihati who has made significant contributions to the blood donation movement and railway passenger activism. Having donated blood 153 times, Sarkar has earned recognition for his sustained commitment to public service. He attended the event with representatives of passenger associations from Halisahar, Kanchrapara and Naihati.
Sarkar said efforts were underway to strengthen the organisational structure of the association in Halisahar and Kanchrapara. He noted that Tapas Ghosh of Halisahar and Sanjay of Kanchrapara were working towards forming their respective committees. He was accompanied by Dr Madhusudan Dey, vice-president of the Naihati unit.
Tracing the association’s growth, Sarkar said it had begun its journey from Belgharia under the leadership of state president Shankar Shil and was gradually expanding its reach. He expressed the hope that the organisation would eventually extend its activities beyond West Bengal, but stressed that its immediate priority must be to address passenger safety concerns and improve railway services across the state.
Drawing on his 42 years of association with the railway system, Sarkar said that although the Railways had undertaken development work, progress sometimes slowed down, making sustained public engagement necessary. Passenger organisations, he said, had an important role in drawing the administration’s attention to unresolved problems and ensuring that essential work was completed without unnecessary delays.
Recalling his recent visit to Sodepur station after a long gap, Sarkar expressed satisfaction at the development work he observed there. He said he hoped further improvements would follow, while emphasising that passenger associations must continue to monitor railway facilities and raise concerns wherever necessary.
Sarkar also underlined the importance of engaging with both the state government and railway authorities to secure meaningful improvements. He said the association should meet the concerned minister and senior railway officials to present passengers’ demands. Regular commuters, including monthly season ticket holders who contribute consistently to railway revenue, deserved particular attention when it came to safety and service quality, he added.
Referring to the changing importance of stations along the suburban railway network, Sarkar said Sodepur had once been a major revenue-generating station on the route, while Naihati had gained greater prominence in recent years, partly because of the large number of visitors travelling to the area to visit Boro Maa. He said improved passenger facilities and safety measures were essential to meet the growing demands on the network.
The association is planning to submit another memorandum to the railway authorities at Naihati in November to press for improvements in passenger services and safety. Sarkar said sustained engagement with railway officials would be necessary to ensure that passenger grievances received timely attention.
In another significant announcement, Sarkar said the association would organise a medical camp on Platform No. 1 at Naihati railway station from November 8 to 12. He invited all members of the association to attend the camp and participate in the initiative.
Shankar Shil endorsed Sarkar’s views on the need for sustained efforts to improve passenger safety and railway services. Ramprakash, former chairman of the Kamarhati Municipality, was also present at the event and supported the view that passenger organisations must periodically press railway authorities to act on outstanding concerns.
The newly formed Agarpara committee also drew attention at the gathering. Led by Ranjit Sahu, the committee brought a sizeable group of members to the event after being formed within a relatively short period. It has already submitted two memoranda to the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) and the Deputy General Manager (DGM), raising concerns about the safety of railway passengers in Agarpara. The initiative was presented as an example of how local passenger groups could organise themselves and pursue their demands through formal channels.
Several other speakers addressed the gathering, with passenger safety, service quality and collective action emerging as the central themes of their remarks.
The 12th Bijoya Sammilani thus served not merely as an occasion for festive greetings but also as a platform for reaffirming the association’s commitment to passenger welfare. Its members called for greater coordination among local committees, sustained engagement with railway officials and collective efforts to secure better services.
The challenge ahead will be to translate these commitments into tangible improvements for commuters, whose daily journeys depend on safe, reliable and efficient railway services.
