Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Gains Global Recognition, Passenger Numbers and Revenue on the Rise

SPT NEWS, KOLKATA & DARJEELING, October 31: Darjeeling’s iconic Toy Train, which winds its way through mist-covered mountains, lush tea gardens and spectacular Himalayan landscapes, has once again drawn international attention. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway has featured in Lonely Planet’s 2027 travel recommendations, bringing fresh recognition to one of India’s most celebrated heritage railway experiences. The recognition is expected to strengthen Darjeeling’s position as a major international tourism destination.
Established in 1881, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is far more than a mode of transport. It represents the history, engineering heritage and cultural identity of the Himalayan region. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, the narrow-gauge railway has remained a major attraction for domestic and international visitors.
According to railway figures, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway carried 215,432 passengers in the financial year 2025–26, compared with 183,003 passengers in the previous financial year. This represents an increase of approximately 17.72 per cent. Revenue also rose from Rs 22.12 crore to Rs 25.37 crore during the same period, registering growth of around 14.71 per cent.
The railway also witnessed encouraging passenger demand during the Durga Puja season. According to published reports, approximately 12,000 passengers travelled on different Darjeeling Himalayan Railway services between October 1 and October 21. Revenue during the 21-day period stood at around Rs 1.41 crore. Additional joyride services were also operated to accommodate the seasonal demand.
The Darjeeling-to-Ghum Toy Train journey remains one of the most popular experiences among visitors. The route passes through the famous Batasia Loop, picturesque mountain settlements and breathtaking landscapes. The opportunity to travel aboard a traditional steam locomotive adds to the railway’s distinctive appeal. The longer journey connecting the plains with the hills also offers visitors a memorable introduction to the region.
Following the international recognition, the Northeast Frontier Railway is looking to strengthen the tourism potential of this historic railway. Heritage joyrides, steam locomotive experiences and the preservation of historic railway stations remain important elements of its tourism appeal. Improving passenger facilities while protecting the railway’s historic character is equally important.
The growing popularity of the Toy Train could also benefit Darjeeling’s wider tourism economy. Hotels, homestays, local transport operators, restaurants, tour guides and travel agencies stand to gain from increased visitor numbers. Tourists visiting Darjeeling are attracted not only by the railway journey but also by the region’s tea gardens, local culture, traditional food and natural beauty. Integrating the Toy Train experience with wider tourism itineraries could create further opportunities for local businesses.
However, converting international recognition into sustained tourism growth will require continued investment and careful planning. Ticket availability, punctuality, passenger safety, cleanliness and regular maintenance of heritage coaches must remain priorities. During peak tourist seasons, services should be planned according to demand while ensuring that the railway’s historic identity and the fragile mountain environment are protected.
The international recognition of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is therefore more than an achievement for a historic train. It represents an opportunity for West Bengal’s tourism industry to strengthen its global presence. With better services, responsible tourism planning and greater participation from local communities, Darjeeling’s iconic Toy Train can continue to attract travellers from across the world.
