এসপিটি নিউজ, কলকাতা, ৩ আগস্ট: জনস্বাস্থ্য, পরিচ্ছন্নতা এবং পরিবেশবান্ধব নগর অবকাঠামো উন্নয়নের লক্ষ্যে কলকাতার বিভিন্ন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ স্থানে ৩২টি বায়ো-টয়লেট চালু করা হয়েছে। বেসরকারি সংস্থা Ramesis RPL এবং Artemis Fountain Foundation-এর যৌথ উদ্যোগে বাস্তবায়িত এই প্রকল্পকে নগর স্যানিটেশন ব্যবস্থার উন্নয়নে একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পদক্ষেপ হিসেবে দেখা হচ্ছে।
পার্ক সার্কাস ক্রসিংয়ে আয়োজিত এক অনুষ্ঠানে কলকাতা পুলিশের পুলিশ কমিশনার অজয় নন্দ আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে এই প্রকল্পের উদ্বোধন করেন। অনুষ্ঠানে উপস্থিত ছিলেন ‘দ্য টয়লেট ম্যান অব বেঙ্গল’ নামে পরিচিত ড. অরিজিৎ বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়, যিনি Ramesis RPL-এর পরিচালক; Artemis Fountain Foundation-এর ট্রাস্টি অর্পিতা রায়, কলকাতা পুলিশের ঊর্ধ্বতন আধিকারিক, প্রশাসনের প্রতিনিধিরা, বিভিন্ন শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠানের শিক্ষার্থী এবং সাধারণ নাগরিক।
অনুষ্ঠানে বক্তব্য রাখতে গিয়ে পুলিশ কমিশনার বলেন, একটি আধুনিক ও দায়িত্বশীল নগর গড়ে তুলতে জনসাধারণের জন্য উন্নত স্যানিটেশন ব্যবস্থা অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। তাঁর মতে, পরিচ্ছন্ন ও সহজলভ্য গণ-শৌচাগার নাগরিক স্বাস্থ্য সুরক্ষার পাশাপাশি সামাজিক সচেতনতা এবং নাগরিক দায়িত্ববোধ বৃদ্ধিতেও ইতিবাচক ভূমিকা রাখবে।
উদ্যোক্তাদের পক্ষ থেকে জানানো হয়, নতুন বায়ো-টয়লেটগুলো পরিবেশবান্ধব প্রযুক্তির মাধ্যমে নির্মিত হয়েছে, যা কার্যকর বর্জ্য ব্যবস্থাপনা নিশ্চিত করার পাশাপাশি পরিবেশের ওপর নেতিবাচক প্রভাব কমাতে সহায়তা করবে। শহরের অধিক জনসমাগমপূর্ণ এবং গুরুত্বপূর্ণ এলাকায় এসব ইউনিট স্থাপন করা হয়েছে, যাতে প্রতিদিনের ব্যবহারকারীরা সহজে এই পরিষেবা গ্রহণ করতে পারেন।
এই উদ্যোগ ‘The Toilet Man of Bengal’-এর দীর্ঘদিনের জনস্বাস্থ্য ও স্যানিটেশন সচেতনতা বৃদ্ধির প্রচেষ্টার ধারাবাহিকতা বলেও উল্লেখ করেন আয়োজকরা। তাঁদের দাবি, অবকাঠামো নির্মাণের পাশাপাশি স্বাস্থ্যবিধি সম্পর্কে জনসচেতনতা বৃদ্ধি এবং টেকসই নগর উন্নয়নই এই প্রকল্পের মূল লক্ষ্য।
সংশ্লিষ্টদের মতে, সরকারি ও বেসরকারি অংশীদারিত্বের মাধ্যমে বাস্তবায়িত এই প্রকল্প ভবিষ্যতে কলকাতার স্যানিটেশন অবকাঠামো আরও শক্তিশালী করতে সহায়ক হবে। একই সঙ্গে এটি একটি পরিচ্ছন্ন, স্বাস্থ্যকর ও পরিবেশবান্ধব মহানগর গড়ে তোলার বৃহত্তর উদ্যোগের অংশ হিসেবে বিবেচিত হচ্ছে।

Kolkata Launches 32 Eco-Friendly Bio-Toilets to Strengthen Urban Sanitation
Public-private initiative aims to improve hygiene and promote sustainable infrastructure across the eastern Indian city

SPT News, KOLKATA, India, Aug. 3 — Authorities and private partners on Monday inaugurated 32 eco-friendly bio-toilets across Kolkata in a move aimed at improving public sanitation, expanding access to hygienic facilities and supporting sustainable urban development.
The project, jointly implemented by Ramesis RPL and the Artemis Fountain Foundation, was formally inaugurated by Ajay Nand, Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, during a ceremony at Park Circus Crossing.
The event was attended by Dr. Arijit Banerjee, Director of Ramesis RPL and widely known as the “Toilet Man of Bengal,” Arpita Roy, Trustee of the Artemis Fountain Foundation, senior officials from Kolkata Police and the civil administration, representatives of the foundation, students and members of the public.
Addressing the gathering, Police Commissioner Ajay Nand underscored the importance of accessible public sanitation infrastructure in maintaining urban cleanliness, civic discipline and public health. He said such initiatives contribute to building cleaner and more responsible cities while encouraging greater community participation in maintaining public spaces.
According to the project partners, the bio-toilets have been developed using environmentally sustainable technology designed to improve waste management, enhance hygiene standards and reduce environmental impact. The facilities have been installed at high-footfall locations across Kolkata where access to clean public sanitation remains a critical requirement.
Organizers said the initiative reflects a collaborative effort between the private sector and civic stakeholders to strengthen the city’s sanitation infrastructure. They added that the project also seeks to raise public awareness about hygiene and sustainable sanitation practices alongside expanding essential public facilities.
The initiative is closely associated with the mission of the “Toilet Man of Bengal,” a campaign advocating improved sanitation and public hygiene through community engagement and environmentally responsible solutions.
As cities across India continue to face growing demands for sustainable public infrastructure amid rapid urbanization, projects such as this are increasingly viewed as part of broader efforts to improve quality of life and support environmental sustainability.
The organizers said the deployment of the 32 bio-toilets is intended to provide durable, accessible and environmentally friendly sanitation facilities while contributing to the long-term vision of a cleaner and greener Kolkata.
