Rangabitan Tourist Property in Sriniketan, just 4 km from Santiniketan, is the best accommodation option. Rangabitan offers three AC suites, six AC standard rooms and three AC deluxe rooms at very reasonable rates. Suites include a living room with dining area, a private balcony and a bedroom. The AC deluxe room has two floors – a small non-AC living room with a dining area on the ground floor, and an AC bedroom with a private balcony on the first floor. All the cottage-style standard rooms have a small open balcony.
A few words about Sonajhuri
In fact, Sonajhuri is a medium sized forest in the Khowai region of Santiniketan, one of the cleanest forests in India. In Bengal, Khowai refers to a geological formation in the districts of Birbhum, Burdwan and Bankura in West Bengal, formed by laterite soils rich in iron oxide, often shaped like small hills. In short, it is like a natural canyon that erodes red laterite soil due to wind and water. The forest is clearly made up of goldfish trees, which bloom their golden flowers in winter, the whole forest floor looks like molten gold. It is also the location of the famous Sonajhuri ‘Hat’ or market, where locals bring their belongings every day, from decorative items to household utensils to the most stunning fabrics and ornaments.

Other major tourist attractions in the area include Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan – one of the immortal creations of Rabindranath Tagore; The Rabindra Bhavan, which was established in 1942, shortly after Tagore’s death, has a museum, archives, library and other units containing a large portion of Tagore’s manuscripts, letters, paintings and sketches and numerous other items; House of Worship in Visva-Bharati (Prayer Hall); And Poush Mela and Spring Festival, the annual and spectacular winter and spring festival that attracts tourists from all over the world. You need at least three to four days to enjoy most of these attractions properly.
Ballabhpur Wildlife Sanctuary from Kankalitala
West Bengal Tourism has highlighted some more important information, which will help the tourists who are staying for a long break. That means they can visit some more places from here. About 8 km away from here is the temple town of Kankalitala, one of the holy Shakti Peethas, where the waist (‘kankal’ in Bengali) of Sati is said to have fallen. Also very close to Sriniketan, only 3 km. Far away, Ballabhpur Wildlife Sanctuary (popularly known as Deer Park), is one of the most successful deer conservation programs in West Bengal, as well as a forested area for numerous inhabitants and migratory birds.
You can visit Bakreshwar, Masanjor
Bakreshwar is more than 50 km away, another of the 51 Shakti Peeths. The place is famous for its several hot springs, ancient temples and a huge thermal power plant. 72 km away is another sadhanpith Tarapith, also known as Sadhak Bamakhepa’s Sadhan Kshetra. At the end of it all you can go for a two hour drive to a hydroelectric dam on the Mayurakshi river in Masanjore near Dumka in Jharkhand.
How to get there
Rangabitan is 175 km by road from Kolkata. There are also multiple trains daily from Sealdah or Howrah to Bolpur and Prantik. From where Rangabitan is only 6 km. The train takes three and a half hours.
