India’s Tourism Boom: 181 Million International Arrivals Highlight Rising Global Appeal

By Aniruddha Pal | Sangbad Prabhakar Times

KOLKATA: India’s tourism sector has emerged as an increasingly important pillar of the country’s economy and global profile, with more than 181.25 million international arrivals recorded between 2014 and 2025, according to government data.

During the same period, India recorded 93.35 million foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs), highlighting the country’s growing presence in the international travel market.

The figures underline the scale of India’s tourism industry, which spans heritage and pilgrimage tourism, beaches, mountains, wildlife, wellness, adventure travel and increasingly popular experiential and rural tourism.

India’s tourism recovery has gathered momentum since the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Government data shows that international tourist arrivals reached 20.57 million in 2024, surpassing the 2019 level of 17.91 million. Foreign tourist arrivals, however, stood at 9.95 million in 2024, still below the pre-pandemic figure of 10.93 million recorded in 2019.

The gap reflects the changing nature of international travel as India continues to rebuild its foreign visitor base while benefiting from broader international travel flows.

Tourism has also become a significant source of employment across India. Government estimates show that employment supported by the tourism sector rose from around 75.85 million in 2018-19 to 84.63 million in 2023-24, underlining the sector’s wider economic impact.

The government is increasingly focusing on expanding tourism beyond India’s traditional destinations. The Northeast, rural areas, coastal regions and lesser-known destinations are receiving greater attention as authorities seek to spread tourism-related economic benefits across more communities.

Infrastructure development, improved connectivity, destination development and promotion of sustainable tourism are becoming central to India’s tourism strategy.

Digital platforms are also playing a growing role in the country’s international tourism campaign. The government has been working with major technology and content platforms to strengthen India’s global destination marketing and present the country through digital storytelling.

India’s diverse tourism offering remains one of its strongest advantages. From the Himalayas and the Northeast to Rajasthan’s heritage cities, Kerala’s backwaters, Goa’s coastline and the cultural and spiritual centres of Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, the country offers a wide range of experiences within a single national market.

But industry observers say sustained growth will depend on addressing challenges including last-mile connectivity, visitor infrastructure, cleanliness, safety, service quality and environmental pressures at popular destinations.

For India, the next phase of tourism growth is therefore likely to focus not simply on attracting more visitors, but on increasing the quality and duration of their stays while ensuring that tourism benefits local communities.

The cumulative figures for the past decade point to a clear trend: India is no longer a peripheral player in global tourism. With international arrivals continuing to expand and tourism increasingly linked to employment, investment and regional development, the sector is emerging as an important component of India’s economic ambitions and global soft power.
