Siliguri Revives Century-Old Tradition of Honouring Dhakis at Town Station

SPT NEWS, SILIGURI: In a heartfelt tribute to the traditional drummers who bring the spirit of Durga Puja alive, Siliguri is reviving a century-old tradition of honouring dhakis at Siliguri Town Station. Unique Foundation Siliguri has organised an initiative to honour 100 dhakis at 11 am today, celebrating their cultural contribution and the city’s heritage.

According to Raj Basu, Convenor of the Association for Conservation and Tourism, Siliguri Town Station was once a major gathering point for dhakis at the beginning of the Durga Puja season. Organisers from puja committees across Siliguri, adjoining tea gardens, government offices, private households and forest villages would arrive at the station to hire drummers for their celebrations.

After Dashami, when the festivities came to an end and the dhakis prepared to return home, people would gather at the station to bid them farewell. Gifts and honorariums were presented to the drummers in recognition of their contribution to the celebrations. Over time, this tradition gradually faded. The latest initiative by Unique Foundation Siliguri seeks to bring it back and restore an important part of the city’s cultural heritage.

During a conversation with senior dhaki Lakkhan Rabi Das from Bhootni in Malda district, Basu learned about the challenges facing the community. Das, who has been practising the traditional art for around 35 to 36 years, pointed out that expenses have increased considerably compared with earnings. Despite the financial difficulties, his sons and grandsons remain involved in the profession, and the family is determined to preserve the tradition.

The dhakis have also raised concerns about the condition of Siliguri Town Station and its surroundings. They say the area has become increasingly uncomfortable for them, citing mosquito infestations and accumulated waste as major problems.

There is, however, hope for improvement. Siliguri Town Station, part of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is undergoing renovation. Basu expressed hope that cooperation from the railway authorities would help improve the station environment and make the dhakis’ experience more comfortable during their annual gathering next year.

The initiative is not merely about distributing gifts or offering financial recognition. It is also an effort to acknowledge the contribution of traditional artists whose music remains inseparable from Bengal’s biggest cultural festival. By restoring this custom, the organisers hope to strengthen Siliguri’s connection with its cultural roots while drawing attention to the livelihood concerns of the dhaki community.

Basu has appealed to citizens to support the initiative under the message “Sonar Siliguri, Sabar Siliguri” — A Golden Siliguri for Everyone. The campaign aims to bring people together to preserve local traditions, respect cultural practitioners and build a more inclusive city.

The century-old association between dhakis and Siliguri Town Station represents more than a festive custom. It reflects the city’s social bonds, cultural memory and the enduring place of traditional music in Durga Puja celebrations. Reviving this tradition offers an opportunity to honour the people behind the rhythms that make the festival unforgettable.
