SPT NEWS, KOLKATA, Sept. 27, 2026: Artificial intelligence and digital transformation took centre stage at a World Tourism Day programme organised by the Association of Tourism Service Providers of Bengal (ATSPB) at the Kolkata Press Club on Sunday.

The programme was held with the support of the eastern regional office of the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.

The event focused on the changing role of tourism in the modern economy, moving beyond travel and leisure to areas including employment, culture, the environment, local communities and international understanding.

Against that backdrop, the organisers placed particular emphasis on how artificial intelligence could reshape tourism services and business practices as the industry enters an increasingly technology-driven era.

The discussion was aligned with the theme of World Tourism Day 2026, which places emphasis on digital initiatives and artificial intelligence in reshaping tourism.

AI and the future of tourism

A key session at the event focused on the role of artificial intelligence and digital transformation in tourism.

Rimjhim Roy, an entrepreneur working in artificial intelligence and an angel investor, delivered the keynote discussion on the subject. She is associated with WavoeAI and AtlasAIx as a co-founder and has also been associated with NASSCOM Insights and NITI Aayog as an advisory member, according to information shared at the event.

Roy discussed the growing importance of artificial intelligence in the digital era and its expanding applications across industries.

She also highlighted the growing relevance of the technology to travel and tourism, where artificial intelligence can support areas such as information processing, customer requirements, service delivery and business operations.

The session was moderated by Abhijit Chattopadhyay, senior director at TCG Lifesciences Digital Leap, who is responsible for information technology and information security.

Other speakers included Partha Pratim Kundu, founder of Book My Hotel, who spoke from the perspective of hospitality technology and direct hotel booking systems.

Narayan Sarkar, a travel technology professional and digital solutions specialist, also participated in the discussion.

Tirthankar De, a brand and digital marketing consultant, shared his views on the role of technology in tourism marketing, customer engagement and business development.

The panel also included Sukumar Mondal, director of Noreste Tour India Pvt. Ltd. Mondal, an engineering graduate from Jadavpur University, began working as a full-time travel agent in 2015 after around 15 years of professional experience. His work focuses primarily on tourism services across eastern and northeastern India.

Opportunities and challenges

The discussion examined the potential of artificial intelligence in tourism, the expansion of technology-driven services, the need for digital transformation, the use of technology in business operations and the challenges that may accompany the transition.

Speakers noted that artificial intelligence could help tourism businesses process information faster and develop more responsive services. At the same time, questions surrounding data security, reliability, human oversight and responsible use remain important as adoption increases.

Debate explores AI as opportunity and threat

The programme concluded with a debate among members of the association on the topic:

“Artificial intelligence is a greater opportunity than a threat to the tourism industry.”

Three speakers argued in favour of the proposition and three against it.

Speaking in favour, Swarup Bhattacharya drew comparisons with the arrival of computers and the internet. He argued that the introduction of new technology should not be viewed only through the lens of potential disruption, but also in terms of the practical benefits it can bring.

Babin Mitra, another speaker supporting the proposition, shared his own experience of using artificial intelligence. He described the technology as an assistant rather than a replacement for people and said it could help users obtain, organise and understand information.

On the opposing side, Sagar Guha raised questions about the increasing dependence on artificial intelligence and referred to concerns about its potentially harmful effects. He also cited a recent report published by a widely circulated English-language newspaper.

Shampa Ghosh drew on her recent travel experience to highlight what she described as limitations and potential disadvantages associated with artificial intelligence.

Debate results

Swarup Bhattacharya was declared the winner of the debate. Shampa Ghosh finished second, while Babin Mitra took third place. Sagar Guha received the consolation prize.

Other participating members were also recognised by the association.

A critical question on data security

One of the important questions raised during the programme came from the association’s vice-president during the panel discussion.

The question was whether travel businesses could safely use artificial intelligence to prepare travel itineraries and whether the information involved would remain secure.

The issue is particularly relevant because travel itineraries can contain personal information, transportation details, accommodation information and other sensitive data.

Panel members responded cautiously, highlighting the need to consider data security and responsible use alongside the benefits of artificial intelligence.

The Kolkata programme therefore went beyond a simple discussion of the advantages or disadvantages of artificial intelligence. It brought together questions about the future of tourism, technology-driven business, human involvement, digital transformation and information security.

As technology becomes increasingly integrated into tourism, the discussions at the World Tourism Day event underscored the importance of balancing innovation with responsible and secure use of emerging technologies.
