West Bengal’s Tourism Map Poised for an Aviation-Led Transformation

From Kalyani and Purulia to Hasimara and Kolkata, new air links and heritage initiatives could reshape the state’s travel economy
By Aniruddha Pal| Special Correspondent

SPT, NEWS, KOLKATA, September 21, 2026: West Bengal is moving towards a broader tourism and aviation network, with plans for a new greenfield airport near Kalyani, four regional airports under the Centre’s regional connectivity programme, the restoration of heritage sites and a new digital platform for tourists.

The developments could expand access to destinations beyond Kolkata and create new opportunities for tourism in the state’s northern, western and southern regions.

The most significant aviation proposal is the Kalyani greenfield airport project, for which the West Bengal government has begun identifying land in Nadia district. Around 2,000 acres spread across nine mouzas, including Kalyani and Birpara, have been identified for the proposed airport.

The project is intended to ease future pressure on Kolkata airport and strengthen air connectivity in South Bengal. A detailed project report and construction schedule are expected to be finalised after the completion of land acquisition and other administrative procedures.

Purulia could gain an air gateway to its tourism circuit

Another potentially significant development is the proposed airport at Chharra in Purulia.

The Chharra airport is among four airports that West Bengal is seeking to develop under the Centre’s UDAN regional connectivity programme. The other locations are Balurghat in South Dinajpur, Hasimara in Alipurduar and Kalaikunda in Paschim Medinipur.

The state government is expected to provide land and basic infrastructure, while the Airports Authority of India is set to oversee airport infrastructure and flight operations under the proposed arrangement.

For Purulia, improved air connectivity could have implications for tourism around the Ayodhya Hills, as well as the district’s landscapes, tribal culture, temples and other attractions.

However, an airport alone does not guarantee higher tourist arrivals. Road connectivity, accommodation, local transport, visitor facilities, safety and effective destination marketing will also determine how successfully new air links translate into tourism growth.

Four regional airports could widen Bengal’s tourism gateway

The four proposed regional aviation projects could create new entry points to parts of West Bengal that currently depend heavily on road and rail connectivity.

Hasimara could strengthen access to the Dooars and other destinations in North Bengal, while Balurghat could improve connectivity in South Dinajpur and links between northern and southern parts of the state.

Kalaikunda could provide an additional aviation gateway for Paschim Medinipur and adjoining areas, while Chharra could support connectivity to Purulia and its surrounding tourism destinations.

If implemented, the projects could gradually reduce the concentration of air-based tourism around Kolkata and encourage the development of a more distributed tourism network.

135 heritage sites targeted for tourism circuits

Aviation is only one part of the state’s emerging tourism strategy.

West Bengal’s Tourism Department and the Archaeological Survey of India have entered into an agreement aimed at restoring 135 heritage sites and developing heritage tourism circuits. River tourism is also part of the broader initiative.

The initiative could help connect historical monuments and cultural attractions with established tourism routes, allowing visitors to explore destinations beyond the state’s better-known landmarks.

The planned integration of heritage conservation with tourism development also has the potential to support local economies if visitor infrastructure and community participation develop alongside the sites.

‘Kolkata Key’ to create a digital guide for visitors

West Bengal is also looking to strengthen the digital side of tourism.

A new mobile application, ‘Kolkata Key’, is expected to provide visitors with information on major tourist attractions, hotels, homestays and transport options.

The proposed platform is intended to work as a one-stop digital guide, helping domestic and international visitors plan itineraries and navigate the city more easily.

The state Tourism Department has also been pursuing the development of a tourist-facing mobile application through an agency-selection process, indicating a broader move towards digital tourism services.

Bengal’s aviation push comes amid wider changes in Indian travel

West Bengal’s plans come at a time when India’s travel and aviation sectors are undergoing rapid changes.

New and restored international air links are expanding the range of destinations accessible from India. On September 21, non-stop services were operating between Guangzhou and New Delhi, underlining the restoration of direct air connectivity between India and China.

Connectivity with Southeast Asia and other international markets is also becoming increasingly important for Indian tourism.

For West Bengal, the challenge will be to connect its own emerging tourism destinations with these wider national and international travel networks.

From airports to waterways, Bengal’s tourism infrastructure is changing

The state’s tourism expansion is not limited to aviation.

A proposed hybrid-electric ferry service between Babughat in Kolkata and Mayapur is intended to promote religious, cultural and river tourism along the Ganges. The project is expected to create a new tourism-oriented inland waterway while providing access to historical and cultural attractions along the river.

Taken together, the airport projects, heritage initiatives, digital tourism services and proposed waterways indicate a broader attempt to diversify the state’s tourism infrastructure.

The road ahead

The emerging picture is not simply about building airports. It is about creating a connected tourism ecosystem in which air connectivity, heritage, nature, culture, waterways, digital services and local economies reinforce one another.

Kalyani could strengthen South Bengal’s aviation capacity. Purulia could gain a new gateway to its hills and cultural landscape. Hasimara could improve access to the Dooars, while Balurghat and Kalaikunda could bring more destinations into the state’s regional aviation network.

The success of these initiatives, however, will ultimately depend on implementation, connectivity beyond the airports, quality of visitor services and sustained destination promotion.

For West Bengal, the emerging opportunity is clear: rather than relying on a tourism model centred largely on Kolkata and a handful of established destinations, the state could develop a more geographically diverse tourism map—one in which the journey to a destination becomes as important as the destination itself.
