Bangladesh’s Political Upheaval Leaves Awami League Grassroots Supporters Facing Fear, Cases and Displacement

Supporters of the ousted Awami League government allege attacks on homes, arrests, mass criminal cases and economic hardship following Sheikh Hasina’s fall

SPT NEWS, DHAKA, Sept. 20: More than two years after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was forced from power, members and supporters of Bangladesh’s Awami League say they continue to face attacks, criminal cases, displacement and economic hardship, exposing a continuing human rights and rule-of-law challenge in the country.

Hasina left Bangladesh on Aug. 5, 2024, following weeks of mass protests that brought down her government. The interim administration that took power subsequently moved to investigate alleged abuses committed during her 15-year rule while also taking measures against the Awami League and its supporters.

Human Rights Watch has documented arbitrary arrests of Awami League officials and supporters, as well as criminal complaints naming large numbers of unidentified people. Between Aug. 6 and Sept. 25, 2024, police filed cases against 92,486 people, most in connection with murder allegations, the rights group said. Nearly 400 former ministers, lawmakers and other Awami League officials were named in more than 1,170 cases.

The rights group said in August 2026 that hundreds of Awami League leaders, members and supporters remained in custody as murder suspects, with some held for prolonged periods without formal charges.

Claims of widespread attacks

The Awami League and its supporters have alleged that the political upheaval was followed by widespread attacks on their homes, businesses and property across Bangladesh.

Party sources have claimed that homes belonging to nearly 20 million party supporters and activists were looted, vandalised or set on fire. That figure has not been independently verified and could not be established from publicly available national records.

Human Rights Watch has nevertheless documented retaliatory violence against people perceived to be associated with the former ruling party following Hasina’s departure. Its reports have also recorded attacks on homes and property belonging to Awami League supporters.

The rights group has stressed that accountability for serious crimes committed during Hasina’s rule is necessary, while warning that mass complaints and arrests without adequate evidence can undermine due process.

Claim of thousands killed

In a recent virtual meeting, Hasina alleged that about 10,000 Awami League members and supporters had been killed across Bangladesh during the past two years.

That figure could not be independently verified. Available international human rights reporting has documented substantial deaths during the 2024 unrest and subsequent violence, but does not support a verified total of 10,000 deaths of Awami League members or supporters.

Human Rights Watch, citing United Nations findings, has reported that about 1,400 people were killed during the crackdown and unrest surrounding the 2024 protests. The figure covers the broader violence and does not represent deaths of Awami League supporters alone.

Professionals caught in the political fallout

The allegations extend beyond party activists.

Journalists, lawyers, academics and other professionals perceived as sympathetic to the previous government have also faced arrests, criminal cases and professional pressure, according to rights groups.

Human Rights Watch has documented cases involving journalists considered favourable to the former government and said security forces had again used criminal complaints against large numbers of unnamed people.

In one 2025 case cited by the rights group, journalists and academics attending a discussion in Dhaka were detained after a crowd accused participants of supporting the Awami League. Human Rights Watch said some of those detained were subsequently charged under anti-terrorism legislation.

A supporter in Sydney describes the impact

The personal cost of the political upheaval is illustrated by the account of Talukder Abdus Salam, a resident of Mirpur in Dhaka who is now living in Sydney, Australia.

Salam, who describes himself as an Awami League supporter, said his permanent residence in Mirpur was attacked, vandalised and looted after the change of government.

He also alleged that several criminal cases had been filed against him for political reasons and that he and members of his family had received threats of violence if they returned to Bangladesh.

The allegations could not be independently verified for this report.

Salam’s account reflects a broader concern expressed by supporters of the former ruling party who say they have left Bangladesh because of fears of arrest, violence or retaliation.

Families face economic and social disruption

The political fallout has also affected families of people who have gone into hiding or left the country.

Supporters say some families have lost access to businesses and homes, while others have struggled to meet legal expenses after relatives were named in criminal cases.

In some cases, children have been forced to interrupt their education and elderly family members have faced difficulties accessing medical care, according to accounts from affected families.

There is no independently verified nationwide estimate of how many families have experienced such conditions.

Concerns over mass criminal cases

The scale of criminal cases filed after the fall of Hasina has emerged as one of the most significant concerns raised by rights organisations.

Human Rights Watch said police complaints in several cases included hundreds of named and unnamed suspects. In some first information reports reviewed by the organisation, individual complaints listed as many as 297 named defendants and hundreds of unidentified people.

In July 2025, police filed 10 murder cases against more than 8,400 people, most of them unnamed, following violence in Gopalganj involving security forces and alleged Awami League supporters, according to Human Rights Watch. The government denied carrying out mass arrests.

The rights group has said people accused of serious crimes should face justice, but that proceedings must be based on evidence and respect fair-trial guarantees.

Awami League banned

The interim government in May 2025 imposed a temporary ban on the activities of the Awami League under amended anti-terrorism legislation, including restrictions on meetings, publications and online activity supporting the party. The Election Commission subsequently cancelled the party’s registration.

Human Rights Watch criticised the restrictions, arguing that they risked curtailing freedom of expression and association, while the authorities have maintained that accountability for abuses committed during the previous government’s rule is necessary.

The political dispute has therefore developed along two parallel tracks: demands for accountability for alleged abuses under Hasina’s government and allegations of arbitrary arrests, political retaliation and denial of due process against people linked to the former ruling party.

A wider test for Bangladesh’s rule of law

Bangladesh’s post-August 2024 transition has created a difficult balance between accountability for alleged abuses and protection of the rights of people accused of wrongdoing.

Human Rights Watch has called for serious crimes to be investigated and prosecuted while warning against arbitrary detention, politically motivated cases and prolonged pretrial imprisonment.

For families associated with the Awami League, the continuing uncertainty has meant fear of arrest, loss of livelihoods and, in some cases, separation from relatives.

For victims of violence during the 2024 uprising, meanwhile, the demand remains that those responsible for killings and other serious abuses be brought to justice.

The competing claims underscore the central challenge facing Bangladesh’s political transition: ensuring accountability for genuine crimes while protecting due process, political rights and the basic security of citizens regardless of their political affiliation.
