NH-10 Sevoke-Rangpo Section to Remain Closed at Night in Two Phases for Landslide Prevention Work

SPT NEWS, Siliguri, 5 October: Night-time traffic restrictions will come into force on the Sevoke-Rangpo section of National Highway 10 in West Bengal from October 7, with the authorities citing slope stabilisation, landslide prevention and protective excavation work as the reasons for the measure.

According to an office order issued by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), Project Monitoring Unit, Siliguri, on October 4, traffic will be prohibited on the 52.1-km stretch between Sevoke Coronation Bridge and Rangpo from 9 pm to 6 am every day during specified periods.

The restriction will be implemented in two phases. The first phase will remain in force from October 7 to October 15, 2026, while the second phase will run from October 26 to November 5, 2026. During both phases, the road will remain closed to all categories of vehicles between 9 pm and 6 am.

The authorities said the restriction has been imposed in the interest of public safety while hill-cutting, protective excavation and landslide mitigation work is carried out along the highway. The night-time closure is intended to reduce risks to road users from falling rocks, earth movement and other hazards associated with work on the vulnerable hill slopes.

The restriction will apply to all vehicles, meaning private cars, passenger vehicles and goods carriers will not be permitted to use the Sevoke-Rangpo section during the notified hours.

The Sevoke-Rangpo corridor is a critical road link connecting North Bengal with Sikkim and carries significant tourist, passenger and commercial traffic. The night-time closure is therefore likely to affect travel schedules, particularly for tourists and transport operators planning overnight journeys towards Sikkim.

District authorities and other concerned agencies may introduce traffic management measures, diversions and other arrangements to facilitate safe movement during the restriction period.

NHIDCL has also stated that additional restrictions or further road closures may be announced separately if required, depending on the progress of the work and prevailing safety conditions.

Tourists, transport operators and other road users planning to travel through the Sevoke-Rangpo corridor during the notified periods are advised to take the night-time closure into account and check the latest traffic arrangements before beginning their journey.
