এসপিটি নিউজ, নয়া দিল্লি ও কলকাতা, ২৪ মার্চ: উদীয়মান বৈশ্বিক নিরাপত্তা চ্যালেঞ্জের প্রেক্ষাপটে ভারত ও যুক্তরাজ্যের প্রতিরক্ষা সহযোগিতা আরও মজবুত করতে ভারতে সফরে এসেছেন যুক্তরাজ্যের বিমান বাহিনী প্রধান (CAS), এয়ার চিফ মার্শাল স্যার হার্ভ স্মিথ। তাঁর এই তিন দিনের সফর দুই দেশের সামরিক অংশীদারিত্বকে নতুন উচ্চতায় পৌঁছে দেওয়ার দিকেই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পদক্ষেপ হিসেবে দেখা হচ্ছে।
সফরের সূচনায় তিনি নয়াদিল্লির জাতীয় যুদ্ধ স্মারকে শহীদ সেনাদের প্রতি শ্রদ্ধা জানান। এরপর ভারতীয় বিমান বাহিনীর পক্ষ থেকে তাঁকে গার্ড অফ অনার প্রদান করা হয়।
এই সফরের অন্যতম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ ছিল ভারতীয় বিমান বাহিনীর প্রধান এয়ার চিফ মার্শাল অমর প্রীত সিং–এর সঙ্গে তাঁর বৈঠক। সেখানে ক্রমবর্ধমান আকাশপথের নিরাপত্তা হুমকি, আধুনিক যুদ্ধ কৌশল এবং দুই দেশের বিমান বাহিনীর মধ্যে সহযোগিতা আরও জোরদার করার বিভিন্ন দিক নিয়ে আলোচনা হয়। সাম্প্রতিক যৌথ প্রশিক্ষণ ও শিক্ষাগত বিনিময় এই সম্পর্ককে ইতিমধ্যেই নতুন মাত্রা দিয়েছে বলে উল্লেখ করা হয়।
চলতি বছরের ফেব্রুয়ারিতে স্বাক্ষরিত একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ চুক্তির অধীনে ভারতীয় বিমান বাহিনী তিনজন যোগ্য উড্ডয়ন প্রশিক্ষককে যুক্তরাজ্যের RAF Valley-তে পাঠাবে। এটি ব্রিটিশ জেট পাইলটদের প্রশিক্ষণের অন্যতম প্রধান কেন্দ্র। পাশাপাশি RAF College Cranwell-এ ইতিমধ্যেই ভারতীয় প্রশিক্ষকদের উপস্থিতি দুই দেশের মধ্যে গভীর আস্থা ও পেশাদারিত্বের প্রতিফলন হিসেবে বিবেচিত হচ্ছে।
সফরকালে দুই দেশের বিমান বাহিনী প্রধান মধ্যপ্রদেশের গোয়ালিয়র এয়ার ফোর্স স্টেশন পরিদর্শনে যাবেন, যেখানে আধুনিক যুদ্ধ প্রস্তুতি ও কার্যপদ্ধতি নিয়ে মতবিনিময় হবে।
এয়ার চিফ মার্শাল স্যার হার্ভ স্মিথ তাঁর সফর প্রসঙ্গে বলেন, ভারতে এসে প্রতিরক্ষা অংশীদারিত্ব আরও জোরদার করার সুযোগ পাওয়া তাঁর জন্য অত্যন্ত সম্মানের। তিনি আশাবাদ ব্যক্ত করেন যে, যৌথ প্রশিক্ষণ, অপারেশনাল সহযোগিতা এবং প্রযুক্তিগত বিনিময়ের মাধ্যমে দুই দেশের সম্পর্ক আগামী দিনে আরও গভীর হবে।
অন্যদিকে, ব্রিটিশ হাই কমিশনের প্রতিরক্ষা উপদেষ্টা ও রয়্যাল নেভির কমোডর ক্রিস সন্ডার্স জানান, এই সফর ভারত–যুক্তরাজ্য প্রতিরক্ষা সম্পর্কের ক্রমবর্ধমান গুরুত্বকেই তুলে ধরে। ক্রমশ জটিল হয়ে ওঠা যৌথ সামরিক মহড়া ও বহু–ক্ষেত্রিক সহযোগিতা এই সম্পর্ককে আরও শক্তিশালী করছে বলেও তিনি উল্লেখ করেন।
উল্লেখ্য, ২০২৬ সালে যুক্তরাজ্য থেকে ভারতে আগত সর্বোচ্চ পদমর্যাদার চতুর্থ সামরিক প্রতিনিধি হিসেবে এই সফর কৌশলগত দিক থেকে অত্যন্ত তাৎপর্যপূর্ণ। সফর চলাকালীন ভারতের বেসামরিক ও সামরিক নেতৃত্বের অন্যান্য গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ব্যক্তিদের সঙ্গেও তাঁর বৈঠকের কথা রয়েছে।
সামগ্রিকভাবে, এই সফর ভারত–যুক্তরাজ্যের প্রতিরক্ষা সহযোগিতাকে আরও সুদৃঢ় করে ভবিষ্যতের নিরাপত্তা ও স্থিতিশীলতার পথে এক নতুন দিগন্ত উন্মোচন করবে বলেই মনে করা হচ্ছে।

UK Air Chief Marshal in India to Deepen Strategic Defence Partnership
SPT News: Amid evolving global security challenges, the Chief of the Air Staff of the United Kingdom, Air Chief Marshal Sir Harvey Smyth, is currently on a three-day official visit to India aimed at strengthening bilateral defence ties.
The visit began with a solemn tribute at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, where he paid respects to fallen soldiers. He was later accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour by the Indian Air Force (IAF), marking the significance of his visit.
A key highlight of the tour was his meeting with India’s Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh. The two leaders held detailed discussions on emerging airspace threats, evolving warfare strategies, and avenues to further enhance cooperation between the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the Indian Air Force. The partnership has already seen significant growth through joint training initiatives and academic exchanges.
Earlier in February this year, India and the UK signed an agreement under which the IAF will deploy three Qualified Flying Instructors to RAF Valley in the United Kingdom—one of the RAF’s premier fast-jet training establishments. Additionally, Indian instructors are already contributing at RAF College Cranwell, highlighting the deep trust and professional synergy between the two forces.
During the visit, both Air Chiefs are also scheduled to travel to Air Force Station Gwalior, where they will gain insights into operational practices and strategies to counter modern aerial threats.
Speaking about his visit, Air Chief Marshal Sir Harvey Smyth described it as a great honour and emphasized the importance of strengthening defence collaboration. He expressed optimism that ongoing exchanges, joint training, and operational cooperation would further deepen ties between the two nations.
Echoing similar sentiments, Commodore Chris Saunders, Defence Adviser at the British High Commission and a senior Royal Navy officer, stated that the visit underscores the growing importance of UK-India defence relations. He noted that the inclusion of IAF instructors in RAF training teams, along with increasingly complex joint exercises and multi-domain cooperation, reflects a robust and evolving partnership.
Notably, this visit marks the fourth and most senior flag-rank visit from the UK to India in 2026, underlining the strategic priority both nations place on defence collaboration.
During his stay, the UK Air Chief is also expected to engage with other senior civilian and military leadership in India.
Overall, the visit is being seen as a significant step toward reinforcing a resilient and forward-looking defence partnership between India and the United Kingdom, aimed at ensuring regional stability, security, and technological advancement.
