Kolkata Hosts Third Monsoon Charity Fair as Raima Sen Calls for Greater Support for Vulnerable Communities

✍️ By Aniruddha Pal
Sangbad Prabhakar Times

SPT NEWS, KOLKATA, September 5, 2026: Sixteen social and voluntary organisations from across West Bengal came together in Kolkata on Saturday for the third edition of the Monsoon Charity Fair, with actor and model Raima Sen calling for greater public participation in initiatives supporting vulnerable children, women and people living with disabilities.

The day-long fair was held at the British Club in Kolkata, at the British Deputy High Commission premises, bringing together organisations working across a diverse range of social causes.

The initiative, launched in 2024, has developed into an annual platform where social organisations can showcase their work, raise funds, promote products and connect directly with members of the public. The second edition was held in 2025.

The event was inaugurated in the presence of British Deputy High Commissioner Andrew Fleming, Anil Punjabi, Chairman of the Eastern Region of the Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI), and Raima Sen, who attended as the special guest.

Sixteen organisations under one roof

The participating organisations were:

  1. All Bengal Women’s Union
  2. Anjali
  3. Antara
  4. Banglanatak dot com
  5. Destiny Reflection
  6. Ek Tara
  7. Future Hope
  8. Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy
  9. Kolkata Society for Cultural Heritage
  10. Opportunity Café
  11. Rinchen’s Momo
  12. Shuktara Cakes
  13. Swadhina
  14. Swayam
  15. Turning Point
  16. Unmesh Child Development

The organisations work across areas including women’s welfare, child development, disability support, mental health, livelihood creation, social rehabilitation and cultural preservation.

The fair featured cakes and other food products, saris featuring traditional kantha embroidery, handmade jewellery and household products made from clay and metal.

For several participating organisations, the event was not simply about raising money. It was also about creating market access for products linked to social programmes and helping vulnerable communities build sustainable livelihoods.

The Kolkata Society for Cultural Heritage, for instance, used the platform to showcase products created by marginalised women from the Sundarbans and connect their craftsmanship with urban consumers.

Raima Sen: Can public figures help change social attitudes?

Speaking exclusively to Sangbad Prabhakar Times, Raima Sen said she had been invited to the event by Andrew Fleming and praised the organisations participating in the fair, particularly those working with children and women.

But her message extended beyond the event itself.

Sen stressed the need for society to do more for children facing physical or mental disabilities and for vulnerable women. She also highlighted the potential role of public figures in bringing greater visibility to social causes.

Her participation was particularly significant because this was her first appearance at the Monsoon Charity Fair, despite the initiative entering its third edition.

The larger question is whether celebrity participation can help social organisations move beyond a limited circle of donors and reach a wider section of society.

The answer, however, depends not only on visibility but also on public trust, transparency and sustained engagement.

India’s voluntary sector and the challenge of reach

India has a large and diverse voluntary sector. The challenge for many organisations is not simply existence, but visibility, reach, funding and long-term sustainability.

Government data from the NGO Darpan platform has indicated that hundreds of thousands of voluntary organisations have been registered on the system.

The larger question is whether these organisations are able to reach enough of the people who need their services.

Public-facing initiatives such as charity fairs can help bridge part of that gap.

They provide organisations with an opportunity to explain their work directly, showcase products created by beneficiaries, attract donors and volunteers, and establish relationships with people who may otherwise never encounter their work.

The Monsoon Charity Fair follows that model by combining social awareness, fundraising, public engagement and livelihood promotion.

Disability and the scale of the challenge

The continuing need for disability support is underlined by India’s 2011 Census, which recorded around 26.8 million people with disabilities, or approximately 2.21% of the population at that time.

Around 69% of people with disabilities were recorded as living in rural areas.

These figures are based on the 2011 Census and should not be treated as a current 2026 estimate. India does not yet have a newer comprehensive population census that can responsibly replace that benchmark.

Government data has also highlighted significant challenges among children and adolescents with disabilities, including barriers to education, rehabilitation and access to support services.

The needs extend from healthcare and therapy to assistive technology, specialised education, family counselling and opportunities for employment and independent living.

Beyond charity: the need for specialised support

The answer to India’s social challenges may not simply be a larger number of voluntary organisations.

What is increasingly important is a stronger ecosystem of specialised, transparent, locally rooted and financially sustainable organisations.

For children with disabilities, effective support can involve rehabilitation, specialised education, therapy, assistive devices and counselling for families.

For vulnerable women, temporary shelter is often only the first step. Long-term rehabilitation may require healthcare, psychological support, skills training, employment opportunities, financial independence and social reintegration.

West Bengal already has government and civil-society support mechanisms for women facing difficult circumstances. But the scale and diversity of need make accessibility, geographical coverage and long-term rehabilitation continuing priorities.

Women’s unpaid care burden

India’s Time Use Survey 2024 provides another perspective on the pressures faced by women.

The survey recorded substantially higher participation by women than men in caregiving activities, with participating women also spending more time on caregiving.

The figures highlight the continuing weight of unpaid care work within households.

For organisations supporting vulnerable women, therefore, assistance cannot necessarily end with temporary protection. Economic independence and sustainable livelihoods can be equally important components of rehabilitation.

This is where charity fairs can offer an alternative model.

When products created by beneficiaries or supported communities are brought to the market, social assistance can be linked with income generation.

From charity to dignity

The products displayed at the fair — cakes, handmade jewellery, embroidered saris and handcrafted household goods — represent more than commercial items.

They can provide a pathway through which skills are converted into income and beneficiaries gain greater economic independence.

The model is built around a simple principle:

Support should create dignity, not dependence.

For organisations working with women, people with disabilities and economically vulnerable communities, sustainable livelihoods can therefore become an important complement to conventional charitable assistance.

Taking social engagement beyond Kolkata

There is currently no authoritative state-wide survey establishing what percentage of West Bengal’s population is aware of charity fairs or similar fundraising initiatives. Any precise percentage would therefore be speculative.

Kolkata, however, has a well-established ecosystem of voluntary organisations, fundraising initiatives, social enterprises and community programmes.

The greater challenge may lie beyond the metropolitan centre.

Smaller organisations working in districts, small towns and rural communities can face difficulties in gaining visibility, securing sustained funding and building direct relationships with potential supporters.

That suggests a possible next step for initiatives of this kind: taking public-facing fundraising and awareness platforms beyond major city venues.

From districts to subdivisions and from small towns to rural communities, wider access could help bring social organisations and potential supporters closer together.

Charity fairs could become year-round platforms

A charity fair can be more than a one-day marketplace.

Organisers can use such events to explain what each organisation does, demonstrate how funds are utilised, identify specific needs, recruit volunteers, connect beneficiary-made products with wider markets and communicate measurable outcomes.

If sustained throughout the year, such initiatives could transform a single-day fair into a long-term platform for social engagement.

A role for business and institutions

Individual donations alone cannot address the scale of social challenges facing a country as large and diverse as India.

Many voluntary organisations, particularly smaller ones, need reliable funding, trained personnel, infrastructure and long-term planning.

Government programmes, institutional funding, corporate social responsibility initiatives, individual donations and public fundraising events can therefore complement one another.

The objective should not be to replace government responsibility with charity. Rather, it should be to create stronger partnerships between public institutions, civil society, businesses and citizens.

Sixteen organisations, one larger message

The 16 organisations participating in Saturday’s fair work across different areas — from women’s welfare and disability support to mental health, child development, livelihood creation and cultural preservation.

Their presence under one roof demonstrated the diversity of West Bengal’s social sector and the potential of bringing different causes into a common public space.

The fair also demonstrated how social work and livelihood creation can intersect.

For organisations working with vulnerable children, women, people with disabilities and other marginalised communities, public engagement can be an important part of building awareness and long-term support.

Raima Sen’s message goes beyond celebrity participation

Celebrity involvement alone cannot solve complex social problems.

But visibility can help bring causes that often remain outside mainstream attention into wider public conversations.

When actors, artists, business leaders and other public figures lend their visibility to credible social initiatives, they can potentially encourage more people to learn about those causes, volunteer or contribute.

Ultimately, however, lasting change depends on institutions, policy, resources, accountability and sustained community participation.

More than a one-day fair

The Monsoon Charity Fair may have been a one-day event, but its potential impact extends beyond the seven-hour programme.

A visitor who buys a product, supports an organisation, volunteers, introduces someone else to a cause or simply leaves with a better understanding of a social issue can contribute to an impact that continues long after the stalls close.

India already has a large voluntary sector.

What remains essential is to strengthen public participation, transparency, sustainable funding, specialised services and the ability of organisations to reach vulnerable communities.

For Kolkata, the third Monsoon Charity Fair has therefore raised a question that extends well beyond the venue:

Can charity move from occasional giving to sustained social participation?

Raima Sen’s message was clear: society must be willing to step forward.

And that may be the most important message to emerge from this year’s fair.
