Airfares Soar During Durga Puja, Putting Travellers Under Pressure

By Our Correspondent | Kolkata

SPT NEWS, KOLKATA, 15 OCTOBER: Airfares from Kolkata to several domestic and international destinations have risen sharply during the Durga Puja travel season, putting additional pressure on travellers. Rising festive demand, higher aviation fuel costs and uncertainty over air travel amid the conflict in West Asia have contributed to the increase. However, passenger traffic at Kolkata airport during the Puja period remains below last year’s levels, according to airport sources.

Among domestic destinations, Goa, Chandigarh and Bagdogra have witnessed strong travel demand. To accommodate the seasonal rush, some airlines have deployed larger aircraft on selected routes. IndiGo, for instance, has been operating 230-seat Airbus A321neo aircraft on routes where smaller aircraft with around 190 seats are generally used.

International destinations have also attracted considerable interest. According to travel industry sources, return airfares from Kolkata to Hanoi have reached approximately ₹65,000–₹75,000 during the festive period. Last year, there was no direct air connection between Kolkata and Hanoi. IndiGo had earlier operated flights from Kolkata to Ho Chi Minh City but subsequently discontinued the service.

A 220-seat aircraft is currently being used on the Hanoi route, according to airport sources. The flight from Kolkata to Hanoi on October 15 had 180 passengers booked, while the October 16 service had bookings for 190 passengers.

Siem Reap in Cambodia has also emerged as an option for travellers. Travel industry representatives estimate that return fares from Kolkata to Siem Reap are around ₹30,000 during the festive season, compared with an average of approximately ₹20,000 during other periods.

Bangkok remains another popular international destination. Return fares from Kolkata to Bangkok have risen to around ₹60,000 during the festive period, nearly double the average of ₹30,000 during regular travel periods. IndiGo’s Kolkata–Bangkok flight on October 15 was fully booked, while bookings for the October 16 service had reached approximately 95 per cent, according to sources.

Anil Punjabi, Eastern Region chairman of the Travel Agents Federation of India, said Hanoi and Siem Reap had attracted considerable interest during this year’s Puja season. Bangkok also continued to be a preferred destination for Kolkata travellers. However, demand for destinations such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi had declined compared with last year amid the conflict in West Asia.

Despite the softer demand, flights to Dubai continued to maintain reasonably good passenger numbers, although the rush was not comparable to that of the previous year, airport sources said.

Domestic airfares have also climbed. Fares on the Kolkata–Chandigarh route have reached approximately ₹24,000, compared with the usual range of ₹16,000–₹18,000. Return fares to Goa have risen to around ₹26,000, against an average of approximately ₹17,000 during regular periods. Demand has also remained strong on routes connecting Kolkata with Port Blair, Bagdogra, Delhi and Mumbai.

Despite the higher fares, passenger traffic at Kolkata airport has yet to match last year’s Puja figures. Airport sources said the combined number of arriving and departing passengers had been around 53,000 a day in recent days, compared with approximately 60,000 during the corresponding period last year.

An airport official expressed hope that passenger numbers could rise to last year’s levels over the coming days as festive travel gathers momentum.

Higher aviation fuel costs have added to the pressure on airlines. Uncertainty in international fuel markets amid the West Asian conflict has affected operating costs, while several Indian carriers have increased fuel-related surcharges this month. These additional costs have further contributed to the financial burden on passengers travelling during the festive season.

With demand remaining strong on several routes but fares staying elevated, travellers are facing a more expensive holiday season. The coming days will determine whether passenger traffic at Kolkata airport recovers to last year’s levels and whether airfares ease as the festive rush progresses.
