Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI), Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI), Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI), Association of Domestic Tour Operators of India (ADTOI), Enterprising Travel Agents Association (ETAA) এবং Outbound Tour Operators Association of India (OTOAI)-এর মতো জাতীয় সংগঠন।

Indian Travel Agents Gain Global Influence Despite Absence of Official Global Ranking

By Aniruddha Pal
Sangbad Prabhakar Times
KOLKATA, India, July 24 — India’s travel agency and tour operating sector has emerged as an increasingly influential force in the global tourism economy, driven by one of the world’s fastest-growing outbound travel markets and one of the largest domestic tourism industries. However, despite its expanding international presence, there is no officially recognized global ranking that measures the position of Indian travel agents against their counterparts in other countries.
Industry experts say no international organization currently publishes a country-by-country ranking of travel agencies or tour operators. Unlike airlines, which operate under globally standardized registration systems such as those of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA), travel agencies function under different national regulatory frameworks and business models, making direct global comparisons difficult.
Travel agencies worldwide range from small independent businesses to multinational corporations specializing in airline ticketing, leisure holidays, inbound and outbound tourism, corporate travel, meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE), medical tourism and destination management. The diversity of the sector has prevented the development of a universal ranking methodology.
Instead of ranking agencies, international organizations assess broader tourism indicators, including market size, passenger volumes, economic contribution and tourism competitiveness.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA), one of the aviation industry’s leading organizations, does not rank travel agencies but maintains data on accredited agencies, airline ticket sales, Billing and Settlement Plan (BSP) transactions and global distribution networks. According to IATA, approximately 70,000 accredited travel agencies operate across 207 countries and territories.
The World Travel Agency Associations Alliance (WTAAA), representing travel agency associations from more than 50 countries and 12 regional organizations, advocates on behalf of the global travel agency sector on issues including airline distribution, technology, cybersecurity and commercial policies. The alliance says its members represent more than 70% of airline sales generated through travel agency distribution channels worldwide.
Similarly, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) evaluates tourism’s contribution to national economies through indicators such as gross domestic product, employment, visitor spending and long-term growth projections across more than 180 economies. The United Nations tourism agency, UN Tourism, formerly known as the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), publishes global statistics on international tourist arrivals, tourism receipts, outbound travel and sustainable tourism but does not rank travel agencies by country.
While no official ranking exists, analysts say India’s growing significance is reflected in the scale and expansion of its tourism market.
India is home to one of the world’s largest domestic tourism markets, recording billions of domestic tourist visits annually. The size of the domestic market has created a vast customer base for travel agencies, tour operators, airlines, hotels and hospitality businesses.
At the same time, India’s outbound travel market has expanded rapidly over the past decade. Destinations including Thailand, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Japan, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Nepal and several European countries increasingly view India as one of their priority source markets.
According to India’s Ministry of Tourism, Indian nationals recorded approximately 32.83 million international departures in 2025, highlighting the country’s growing importance in global travel demand.
Industry observers attribute the expansion to rising disposable incomes, a growing middle class, improved international air connectivity, the rapid growth of low-cost airlines, digital travel booking platforms and wider adoption of electronic visa systems.
Indian travel companies today operate across a broad spectrum of services, including leisure travel, religious tourism, medical tourism, luxury holidays, corporate travel, cruise vacations, visa facilitation, customized itineraries and MICE tourism.
The country’s increasing purchasing power has also strengthened its position as a major global source market. National tourism organizations from destinations such as Thailand, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Switzerland, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom regularly organize roadshows, business-to-business meetings, trade fairs and familiarization trips in India to build relationships with Indian travel professionals.
India’s travel trade is represented by several national industry bodies, including the Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI), the Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI), the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI), the Association of Domestic Tour Operators of India (ADTOI), the Enterprising Travel Agents Association (ETAA) and the Outbound Tour Operators Association of India (OTOAI). These organizations work closely with international tourism boards, airlines and industry stakeholders.
Major international airlines, including Emirates, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Etihad Airways and others, continue to rely on Indian travel agencies as an important distribution channel, while many destination marketing organizations have expanded trade engagement programmes targeting the Indian market.
Recognition for Indian travel companies also comes through industry awards. The World Travel Awards annually recognizes “India’s Leading Travel Agency,” although the award is not intended to rank agencies globally. In recent years, Riya Travel & Tours has received that distinction, reflecting recognition within the Indian market rather than a worldwide comparative ranking.
Despite the sector’s strong growth, challenges remain. Industry experts point to the fragmented nature of the travel agency landscape, uneven digital adoption, increasing competition from online travel platforms, changing airline commission structures and the need for stronger international branding as key issues facing the industry.
Although no internationally accepted ranking places Indian travel agents within a global hierarchy, tourism analysts say the country’s expanding domestic market, rapidly growing outbound travel demand and increasing engagement with international tourism partners have positioned India as one of the world’s most strategically important travel source markets. As global tourism continues to recover and expand, industry observers expect Indian travel agencies and tour operators to play an increasingly significant role in shaping international travel flows.
