Homestays Gain Ground as India’s Tourism Accommodation Market Expands

By Aniruddha Pal | Sangbad Prabhakar Times

SPT NEWS, KOLKATA, 15 October: Homestays, holiday homes and other alternative accommodation options are gaining popularity in India’s tourism industry. While hotels have traditionally been the preferred choice for travellers, many tourists are now looking for more personalised stays, closer connections with local communities and opportunities to experience the culture and natural surroundings of their destinations.

According to the joint report How India Travels 2026: The Homes Edit, published on October 14 by Booking.com and VIDEC Consultants, the gross booking value of India’s alternative accommodation market could reach approximately ₹41,510 crore by FY2028–29. The market includes homestays, holiday homes, rental apartments and other forms of accommodation outside the traditional hotel sector. The report’s forecast highlights the growing importance of alternative accommodation in India’s tourism industry.

Changing travel preferences are helping drive this trend. Many visitors want more than sightseeing. They are increasingly interested in local food, traditions, lifestyles and experiences that bring them closer to the communities they visit. Homestays in mountain villages, forest regions and rural destinations offer such experiences. Holiday homes are also attracting families, groups of friends and travellers planning longer stays.

However, the expansion of this market brings challenges. The quality of services can vary considerably between properties. Cleanliness, security, drinking water, sanitation, fire safety and effective complaint-handling systems are important to ensure a satisfactory guest experience. The use of residential properties for short-term rentals also requires compliance with local regulations and consideration for the interests of permanent residents.

For West Bengal, the growing demand for alternative accommodation presents significant opportunities. Darjeeling and Kalimpong, the Dooars, the Sundarbans and Purulia all have potential for homestay-based tourism. These destinations can offer visitors opportunities to experience mountain life, forest landscapes, riverine environments and local culture while supporting small businesses and family-run establishments.

Homestays can also generate income beyond accommodation. Local families and businesses may benefit from demand for traditional food, transport, local guides, handicrafts and other tourism-related services. In remote and rural areas, this model could become an additional source of livelihood, provided that residents receive appropriate training and support.

Sustained growth will require cooperation among tourism departments, local administrations, booking platforms and accommodation providers. Reliable property information, transparent pricing, safe booking systems and consistent service standards can help build traveller confidence. In environmentally sensitive destinations, managing visitor numbers and protecting local ecosystems must also remain priorities.

The rise of homestays and alternative accommodation represents more than a change in where tourists stay. It offers an opportunity to spread tourism income to local communities and destinations beyond major cities. For West Bengal, the challenge will be to develop this sector in a planned and responsible manner, balancing visitor comfort, local livelihoods and environmental protection.
