From Hunters to Protectors: Local Communities Lead Amur Falcon Conservation in Nagaland

By Aniruddha Pal | Sangbad Prabhakar Times

SPT NEWS, KOLKATA, 15 OCTOBER: Local communities are playing an important role in protecting migratory Amur falcons in Nagaland’s Wokha district, where former hunters are being encouraged to become conservation partners. The initiative around the Doyang Reservoir highlights how community participation can help protect wildlife while creating opportunities for responsible nature-based tourism.

Every year, thousands of Amur falcons arrive in the Doyang Reservoir region during their long migratory journey from Siberia towards southern Africa. The area provides an important resting place for these birds, making their seasonal arrival a major attraction for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.

One of the significant aspects of the conservation effort is the involvement of people who were once associated with hunting. Their participation reflects how awareness, community engagement and alternative livelihood opportunities can help transform local attitudes towards wildlife protection.

The presence of large numbers of Amur falcons also offers potential for responsible birdwatching tourism. With proper planning, local participation and clear guidelines for visitors, the region could attract nature lovers while creating additional livelihood opportunities for nearby communities.

However, tourism must be managed carefully. Visitors should avoid disturbing the birds, respect designated areas and follow conservation guidelines. Protecting the birds’ resting and feeding grounds must remain the priority.

For birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts in West Bengal, Nagaland’s Amur falcon congregation offers an interesting travel opportunity. It also highlights the importance of exploring natural destinations responsibly and supporting communities involved in conservation.

The initiative sends a powerful message: when local people become partners in wildlife protection, even former hunters can become conservationists. Such community-led efforts can help safeguard migratory birds and build a more sustainable relationship between nature conservation and tourism. (Pics: AI Generated)
