নেপালের রসুয়া, নুওয়াকোট, ধাদিং ও গোর্খা জেলায় ভয়াবহ আকস্মিক বন্যার পর পরিস্থিতি ক্রমেই আরও উদ্বেগজনক হয়ে উঠছে। বুধবার, ২৬ আগস্ট সকাল সাড়ে ৮টা নাগাদ ভোটেকোশী ও ত্রিশূলী নদী অববাহিকায় নেমে আসা প্রবল জলস্রোত, কাদা ও পাথরের ধাক্কায় বিস্তীর্ণ এলাকা বিপর্যস্ত হয়েছে। নেপাল পর্যটন বোর্ডের সর্বশেষ পরিস্থিতি-আপডেট অনুযায়ী, ৬৬৭ জন ভ্রমণকারী এখনও নিখোঁজ বা যোগাযোগের বাইরে, যার মধ্যে ১২৭ জন নেপালি এবং ৫৪০ জন বিদেশি নাগরিক। তবে এই সংখ্যা মূলত পর্যটন ও ট্রাভেল-সংক্রান্ত এজেন্সিগুলির প্রাথমিক রেকর্ডের ভিত্তিতে তৈরি এবং এখনও যাচাই চলছে।
সবচেয়ে উদ্বেগের জায়গা ভারত। নেপাল পর্যটন বোর্ডের ২৭ আগস্টের দেশভিত্তিক তালিকায় ১৭৮ জন ভারতীয় নাগরিককে নিখোঁজ হিসেবে চিহ্নিত করা হয়েছে—যা ওই তালিকায় থাকা বিদেশি নাগরিকদের মধ্যে সর্বোচ্চ। এর পর রয়েছে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ৬৫, ইউক্রেনের ৫৩, মালয়েশিয়ার ৫১, অস্ট্রেলিয়ার ৩৫ এবং যুক্তরাজ্যের ৩৩ জন।
কিন্তু ভারতের ক্ষেত্রে আরও বড় উদ্বেগ—২৮৮ জনের সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ নেই
নেপাল পর্যটন বোর্ডের পর্যটক-ভিত্তিক তালিকার ১৭৮ জনের সংখ্যার পাশাপাশি ভারতের বিদেশ মন্ত্রকের সর্বশেষ তথ্য পরিস্থিতির আরও বড় চিত্র সামনে এনেছে। ২৭ আগস্ট সন্ধ্যা পর্যন্ত ২৮৮ জন ভারতীয় নাগরিকের সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ করা যাচ্ছে না বলে জানিয়েছে বিদেশ মন্ত্রক। এই সংখ্যার মধ্যে পর্যটক ও তীর্থযাত্রীদের পাশাপাশি নেপালে কর্মরত ভারতীয় নাগরিকও রয়েছেন।
বিদেশ মন্ত্রকের মুখপাত্র রণধীর জয়সওয়াল জানিয়েছেন, যোগাযোগহীন ভারতীয়দের মধ্যে ত্রিশুলি-১ জলবিদ্যুৎ প্রকল্পে কর্মরত ৭৩ জন ভারতীয়ও রয়েছেন। একই সঙ্গে তামিলনাড়ুর দুটি তীর্থযাত্রী দলের সদস্য এবং অন্যান্য রাজ্যের পর্যটকরাও রয়েছেন। ২১ জন ভারতীয়কে ইতিমধ্যে উদ্ধার করা হয়েছে এবং তাঁদের কাঠমান্ডুতে নিয়ে আসার প্রক্রিয়া চলছে।
অর্থাৎ, নেপাল পর্যটন বোর্ডের ১৭৮ জন ভারতীয় নিখোঁজের সংখ্যা এবং বিদেশ মন্ত্রকের ২৮৮ জন যোগাযোগহীন ভারতীয়—এই দুটি পরিসংখ্যানকে একই তালিকা হিসেবে দেখা ঠিক হবে না। প্রথমটি পর্যটন সংস্থা ও ট্রেকিং কোম্পানির প্রাথমিক পর্যটক-রেকর্ড; দ্বিতীয়টি ভারতের নাগরিকদের নিয়ে বৃহত্তর সরকারি অনুসন্ধান, যার মধ্যে পর্যটক, তীর্থযাত্রী এবং কর্মরত নাগরিকরাও রয়েছেন।
কাঠমান্ডু–লাসা রুটেও ভয়াবহ বিপর্যয়
ভোটেকোশী নদী-ঘেঁষা রসুয়ার এলাকা শুধু নেপালের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পর্যটন অঞ্চল নয়, কৈলাস-মানস সরোবর যাত্রার অন্যতম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ স্থলপথও। ফলে এই দুর্যোগে পর্যটক ও তীর্থযাত্রী—দুই ধরনের ভারতীয় নাগরিকই বিপদের মধ্যে পড়েছেন।
আন্তর্জাতিক সংবাদ সংস্থা রয়টার্স জানিয়েছে, হিমালয় অঞ্চলে হিমবাহের একটি বড় অংশ ভেঙে পড়ে নদীর প্রবাহে বিপুল পরিমাণ কাদা ও পাথর নেমে আসার পর এই ভয়াবহ বন্যার সৃষ্টি হয়। বিপর্যয়টি নেপাল থেকে তিব্বতের দিকে যাওয়া গুরুত্বপূর্ণ রুটগুলিকেও কার্যত বিচ্ছিন্ন করে দিয়েছে। নেপাল ও চিন মিলিয়ে নিখোঁজের সংখ্যা এক হাজারেরও বেশি এবং উদ্ধারকাজ এখনও চলছে।
এপি-র প্রতিবেদনে বলা হয়েছে, হিমবাহ ধসের পর নদীতে সাময়িকভাবে জল আটকে গিয়ে পরবর্তী সময়ে প্রবল জলস্রোত তৈরি হয়। বিশেষজ্ঞদের মতে, দ্রুত উষ্ণ হয়ে ওঠা হিমালয় অঞ্চলে হিমবাহ-সম্পর্কিত বিপদের ঝুঁকি বাড়ছে।
৩১ বিদেশি নাগরিক উদ্ধার
নেপাল পর্যটন বোর্ড জানিয়েছে, ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত এলাকা থেকে ৩১ জন বিদেশি নাগরিককে উদ্ধার করা হয়েছে। তাঁদের মধ্যে ১১ জন ভারতীয়, চার জন দক্ষিণ কোরিয়ার, দু’জন করে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র, রাশিয়া ও ইতালির এবং একজন করে বুলগেরিয়া ও সুইজারল্যান্ডের নাগরিক রয়েছেন। আরও আটজন উদ্ধার হওয়া বিদেশির জাতীয়তা তখনও নিশ্চিত করা যায়নি।
এর আগে ১৫:৩০ পর্যন্ত প্রকাশিত পৃথক তালিকায় ২৭ জন বিদেশি নাগরিকের নাম প্রকাশ করেছিল নেপাল পর্যটন বোর্ড, যার মধ্যে ভারতীয় নাগরিকদের একটি উল্লেখযোগ্য সংখ্যাও ছিল। পরবর্তী আপডেটে উদ্ধার হওয়া বিদেশির সংখ্যা বেড়ে ৩১ হয়েছে।
ভারতের তরফে জরুরি তৎপরতা
ভারত সরকার ইতিমধ্যেই নেপালের সঙ্গে সমন্বয় করে নিখোঁজ ভারতীয়দের সন্ধান এবং উদ্ধারকাজে তৎপর হয়েছে। বিদেশমন্ত্রী এস জয়শঙ্কর ২৭ আগস্ট বিদেশ মন্ত্রকের শীর্ষ আধিকারিক এবং কাঠমান্ডু ও বেজিংয়ে নিযুক্ত ভারতীয় রাষ্ট্রদূতদের সঙ্গে বৈঠক করে পরিস্থিতি পর্যালোচনা করেছেন। ভারতীয় কর্তৃপক্ষ নেপালের পাশাপাশি রাজ্য সরকার, পর্যটন সংস্থা এবং প্রকল্প কর্তৃপক্ষগুলির সঙ্গে তথ্য যাচাই করছে।
ভারত নেপালে দ্বিতীয় দফায় ৩৭.৫ টন মানবিক সহায়তা, ওষুধ ও খাদ্যসামগ্রী পাঠিয়েছে। এর আগে আরও ১০ টন ত্রাণসামগ্রী পাঠানো হয়েছিল।
বিদেশ মন্ত্রক জানিয়েছে, নেপালের পাশাপাশি চিনের তিব্বত অংশেও প্রায় ২০০ জন ভারতীয় নাগরিক সাহায্যের জন্য যোগাযোগ করেছেন। ফলে ভারতীয় নাগরিকদের সামগ্রিক পরিস্থিতি শুধুমাত্র নেপালের নিখোঁজ পর্যটকের তালিকা দিয়ে বোঝা সম্ভব নয়।
পর্যটন শিল্পের বার্তা: “নেপাল একা নয়”
এই ভয়াবহ পরিস্থিতিতে ভারতের পর্যটন শিল্পের পক্ষ থেকেও উদ্বেগ প্রকাশ করা হয়েছে। ট্রাভেল এজেন্টস ফেডারেশন অব ইন্ডিয়া (TAFI)-র পূর্বাঞ্চলীয় অঞ্চল (Eastern Region)-এর চেয়ারম্যান অনিল পাঞ্জাবি নেপালের বিপর্যয়ে গভীর শোক প্রকাশ করে উদ্ধার ও ত্রাণ তৎপরতা আরও জোরদারের আবেদন জানিয়েছেন।

“নেপালে ঘটে যাওয়া ভয়াবহ আকস্মিক বন্যা আমাদের গভীরভাবে শোকাহত ও মর্মাহত করেছে।
এই বিধ্বংসী ক্ষয়ক্ষতি, অমূল্য প্রাণের হানি এবং বিপুল সংখ্যক মানুষের নিখোঁজ থাকার বিষয়টি আমাদের সবার জন্যই অত্যন্ত উদ্বেগের।
ভ্রমণ খাতের সাথে যুক্ত সদস্য হিসেবে, আমাদের সমবেদনা বিশেষ করে সেইসব পর্যটক, পুণ্যার্থী, গাইড, চালক এবং স্থানীয় সম্প্রদায়ের মানুষের প্রতি, যারা এই অভূতপূর্ব ট্র্যাজেডির শিকার হয়েছেন। রিপোর্ট অনুযায়ী নিখোঁজ বা আটকে পড়া মানুষদের মধ্যে বহুসংখ্যক ভারতীয় নাগরিকও রয়েছেন, যা ভারতজুড়ে পরিবারগুলোর জন্য অত্যন্ত বেদনাদায়ক একটি পরিস্থিতি তৈরি করেছে।
এই চরম সংকট মুহূর্তে মানুষের জীবন রক্ষা এবং প্রতিটি আটকে পড়া ভ্রমণকারীকে নিরাপদে উদ্ধার করাই আমাদের প্রধান অগ্রাধিকার হওয়া উচিত। নেপাল ও ভারতের কর্তৃপক্ষের কাছে আমরা জোর দাবি জানাচ্ছি যেন উদ্ধার, ত্রাণ ও যোগাযোগ ব্যবস্থা আরও জোরদার করা হয় এবং প্রিয়জনদের খবরের অপেক্ষায় থাকা পরিবারগুলোকে সময়মত সঠিক তথ্য প্রদান করা হয়।
ভ্রমণ শিল্প নেপাল ও তার জনগণের পাশে দৃঢ়ভাবে দাঁড়িয়েছে। এই বিপদের দিনে কর্তৃপক্ষ, ট্যুর অপারেটর এবং ভ্রমণকারীদের সম্ভাব্য সব ধরনের সহযোগিতা প্রসারিত করতে আমরা প্রস্তুত।
পরিস্থিতি নিরাপদ না হওয়া পর্যন্ত সব ভ্রমণকারী ও ট্রাভেল এজেন্টদের অত্যন্ত সতর্কতা অবলম্বন করার, ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত এলাকাগুলো এড়িয়ে চলার এবং কর্তৃপক্ষের দেওয়া নির্দেশিকা কঠোরভাবে মেনে চলার জন্য আমি বিনীত অনুরোধ জানাচ্ছি।
যাঁরা তাঁদের প্রিয়জনদের হারিয়েছেন, তাঁদের পরিবারের প্রতি আমাদের গভীর সমবেদনা রইল। আমরা নিখোঁজ ব্যক্তিদের নিরাপদ প্রত্যাবর্তন এবং আহতদের দ্রুত সুস্থতা কামনা করি।
নেপাল একা নয়। পুরো ভ্রমণ সমাজ নেপালের পাশে আছে।”
সংখ্যার মধ্যে যে সতর্কতাটি সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ
এই মুহূর্তে নেপালের বন্যা পরিস্থিতির ক্ষেত্রে বিভিন্ন সংস্থার পরিসংখ্যানে পার্থক্য রয়েছে। নেপাল পর্যটন বোর্ডের এজেন্সি-ভিত্তিক পর্যটক তালিকা ২৬ আগস্টের ৩৮৪ জন থেকে ২৭ আগস্টে ৬৪৪ এবং পরে ৬৬৭ জনে পৌঁছেছে। বোর্ড নিজেই জানিয়েছে, এই তথ্য বিভিন্ন ট্রাভেল এজেন্সি, ট্রেকিং কোম্পানি, গাইড, স্থানীয় প্রশাসন ও নিরাপত্তা সংস্থার কাছ থেকে পাওয়া রেকর্ড মিলিয়ে যাচাই করা হচ্ছে।
অন্যদিকে ভারতের বিদেশ মন্ত্রকের ২৮৮ জন যোগাযোগহীন ভারতীয়ের হিসাব বৃহত্তর নাগরিক-ভিত্তিক অনুসন্ধান। তাই সংখ্যার এই পার্থক্যকে পরস্পরবিরোধী তথ্য না ধরে দুটি পৃথক তথ্য-পরিধি হিসেবে দেখা প্রয়োজন।
উত্তর-পূর্ব ভারত, নেপাল, ভুটান, বাংলাদেশ ও মিয়ানমারে গ্রামীণ পর্যটন ও ঐতিহ্য সংরক্ষণ কর্মী রাজ বসু এক বিবৃতিতে বিশিষ্ট বাউল শিল্পী পাররবতী বাউল –এর নেপাল ভ্রমণের ছবি পোস্ট করে বলেছেন- “আমি শান্তিনিকেতনে ছিলাম; সেখানে শুনেছিলাম যে শ্রদ্ধেয়া পার্বতী বাউল তাঁর ভারতীয় ও বিদেশি শিষ্যদের নিয়ে কৈলাসে নিরাপদে আছেন..”
পরিস্থিতি এখনও অত্যন্ত সংকটজনক
নেপাল ও তিব্বত মিলিয়ে আন্তর্জাতিক সংবাদমাধ্যমগুলির সর্বশেষ প্রতিবেদনে মৃতের সংখ্যা কয়েকশো ছাড়িয়েছে এবং নিখোঁজের সংখ্যা এক হাজারেরও বেশি। রয়টার্স জানিয়েছে, নেপাল ও চিনের সীমান্তবর্তী অঞ্চলে উদ্ধারকাজের পাশাপাশি নতুন করে জলবন্দি হয়ে পড়া এলাকার জন্যও সতর্কতা জারি রয়েছে।
ফলে আপাতত সবচেয়ে বড় প্রশ্ন শুধু কতজন নিখোঁজ তা নয়—কত দ্রুত তাঁদের অবস্থান নিশ্চিত করা যাচ্ছে এবং কতজনকে জীবিত উদ্ধার করা সম্ভব হচ্ছে।
বিশেষ করে ভারতীয় পরিবারগুলির জন্য আগামী কয়েক ঘণ্টা অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। নেপাল পর্যটন বোর্ড, ভারতীয় বিদেশ মন্ত্রক, ভারতীয় দূতাবাস, স্থানীয় প্রশাসন এবং পর্যটন সংস্থাগুলির সমন্বিত তথ্যই এখন নির্ভরযোগ্য আপডেটের প্রধান ভিত্তি।

Nepal Flood Disaster: 178 Indian Tourists Missing as Search Intensifies for 667 People

A devastating flash flood in Nepal has triggered a major search and rescue operation, with 667 people reported missing, including 178 Indian nationals listed as missing in tourism-sector records, according to the latest updates from the Nepal Tourism Board.
The disaster struck on the morning of August 26, 2026, when severe flash floods swept through areas of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Gorkha, affecting the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems. Nepalese authorities, tourism agencies, security forces and local administrations are continuing efforts to trace tourists, pilgrims, workers and other travellers caught in the disaster.
The Nepal Tourism Board said its latest verified and agency-based assessment showed 667 people missing, including 127 Nepali nationals and 540 foreign nationals. The figures are being continuously cross-checked with travel agencies, trekking companies, guides, local authorities and security agencies.
India Faces the Largest Tourist Emergency
India accounts for the largest number of foreign nationals listed as missing in the Nepal Tourism Board’s latest country-wise assessment, with 178 Indian citizens yet to be accounted for.
Other nationalities listed include 65 people from the United States, 53 from Ukraine, 51 from Malaysia, 35 from Australia and 33 from the United Kingdom, underlining the international scale of the disaster.
However, Indian government figures present an even broader picture. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, 288 Indian nationals in Nepal remain out of contact, a figure that includes not only tourists and pilgrims but also Indian nationals working in the country.
Among them are 73 Indian workers associated with the Trishuli-1 hydropower project, according to official information.
The difference between the Nepal Tourism Board’s figure of 178 missing Indians and the Indian government’s figure of 288 people out of contact reflects the different scope of the two assessments. The Nepal Tourism Board’s data is based primarily on tourism and travel agency records, while the Indian government’s efforts cover a wider group of citizens, including tourists, pilgrims and workers.
Rescue Operations Continue
Nepal’s authorities have intensified rescue and evacuation efforts in the affected regions.
According to the Nepal Tourism Board’s latest Situation Update, 31 foreign nationals have been rescued from the disaster-hit areas. They include 11 Indians, four South Koreans, two Americans, two Russians and two Italians, as well as citizens of Bulgaria and Switzerland. The nationalities of eight others were still being confirmed.
Earlier in the day, Nepalese authorities had reported the rescue of 27 foreign nationals, indicating that the number of people brought to safety had increased as search operations expanded.
India has also stepped up diplomatic and humanitarian efforts. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reviewed the situation with senior officials and Indian diplomatic representatives in Kathmandu and Beijing as authorities worked to establish the status of Indian citizens affected by the disaster.
New Delhi has sent additional humanitarian assistance, including food, medicines and emergency supplies, to Nepal.
Indian authorities are also dealing with reports involving Indian nationals on the Chinese side of the Himalayan region, where around 200 people have reportedly sought assistance, further complicating efforts to establish the full scale of the crisis.
A Key Route for Tourists and Pilgrims
The disaster has raised particular concern because the affected region is an important corridor for tourism and pilgrimage, including travellers heading towards routes connected with the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage.
The destruction of roads, bridges and other infrastructure has left several groups stranded or out of communication, while difficult terrain and unstable weather conditions continue to complicate rescue operations.
International media reports have highlighted the scale of the devastation across the Himalayan region, where floodwaters, debris and landslides have disrupted key transport routes and isolated communities.
Authorities in Nepal continue to warn travellers to avoid affected areas and follow official safety advisories.
Tourism Industry Calls for Stronger Rescue Efforts
Expressing deep concern over the humanitarian crisis, Anil Punjabi, Chairman of the Eastern Region of the Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI), called for stronger rescue, relief and communication efforts.
He said:“The devastating flash floods that have occurred in Nepal have deeply saddened and shocked us. The scale of destruction, the loss of precious lives and the large number of people reported missing are matters of grave concern to all of us.
As members of the travel sector, our sympathies are especially with the tourists, pilgrims, guides, drivers and members of local communities who have fallen victim to this unprecedented tragedy. Reports indicate that a large number of Indian nationals are among those missing or stranded, creating an extremely painful situation for families across India.
At this critical moment, saving lives and ensuring the safe rescue of every stranded traveller must be our foremost priority. We strongly urge the authorities in Nepal and India to further strengthen rescue, relief and communication mechanisms and ensure that families waiting for news of their loved ones receive accurate and timely information.
The travel industry stands firmly with Nepal and its people. During this time of crisis, we are ready to extend every possible assistance to authorities, tour operators and travellers.
Until the situation becomes safe, I sincerely urge all travellers and travel agents to exercise extreme caution, avoid affected areas and strictly follow all advisories issued by the authorities.
Our deepest condolences go to the families of those who have lost their loved ones. We pray for the safe return of those who remain missing and for the speedy recovery of the injured.
Nepal is not alone. The entire travel community stands with Nepal.”
Figures Still Being Verified
The Nepal Tourism Board has stressed that the number of missing travellers remains subject to verification.
Its agency-based records rose sharply from an initial count of 384 missing travellers on August 26 to 644 by midday on August 27, before reaching 667 in a later update.
Authorities are continuing to reconcile information received from travel agencies, trekking operators, guides, local administrations and security agencies.
For families across India, the next several hours remain critical.
As rescue teams continue to search the flood-ravaged Himalayan terrain, the immediate priority remains locating those who are stranded or missing and restoring communication with communities cut off by the disaster.
With Nepalese and Indian authorities coordinating rescue and information-sharing efforts, the fate of hundreds of travellers—including a large number of Indian citizens—remains at the centre of one of the region’s most serious tourism-related emergencies in recent years. Photo credit: X handle
