প্রথম ইনিংসেই সুথারের আঘাত

Suthar’s 10-wicket haul powers India to 165-run win over Sri Lanka in Galle
GALLE, Sri Lanka, Aug. 19 — India defeated Sri Lanka by 165 runs in the opening Test at Galle on Wednesday, with young left-arm spinner Manav Suthar completing a maiden 10-wicket haul in only his second Test to give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
Suthar returned figures of 6-55 in Sri Lanka’s second innings, adding to his four wickets in the first innings, as the hosts were bowled out for 206 while chasing a daunting 372. India sealed victory just minutes before heavy rain swept across Galle, potentially denying the hosts any further opportunity to fight back.
The result capped an impressive all-round performance from India in their 600th Test match. The visitors had earlier built a commanding first-innings lead after scoring 462, before setting Sri Lanka a record target at the venue.
Padikkal sets up India’s advantage
India’s first-innings total was built around a superb 167 from Devdutt Padikkal, his maiden Test century. His innings included 15 fours and a six and provided the foundation for India’s imposing total.
KL Rahul contributed 82 after initially retiring hurt with cramps, while Dhruv Jurel struck a quick 51. Sri Lanka’s spinners Prabath Jayasuriya and debutant Keshara Nuwantha managed to take wickets, but India’s lower order ensured the visitors reached 462 for nine before declaring.
Sri Lanka responded with 284 in the first innings, leaving India with a 178-run advantage.
Pant adds the finishing touch
India’s second innings was more challenging, but Rishabh Pant’s aggressive 66 and Padikkal’s composed 44 helped the visitors reach 193.
That left Sri Lanka with 372 to win — a target beyond the previous record fourth-innings chase at Galle. Pakistan had successfully chased 344 against Sri Lanka at the ground in 2022.
Pant also created a piece of Test history during the innings by becoming the first Indian batter to reach 100 sixes in Test cricket.
Suthar breaks Sri Lanka’s resistance
Sri Lanka began its chase with determination but lost four wickets for 84 by the close of play on Tuesday, leaving India firmly in control.
The hosts resumed on the final morning needing 288 more runs, with Dhananjaya de Silva and Sonal Dinusha attempting to prolong the contest.
Their resistance, however, was eventually broken by Suthar.
Sri Lanka reached 175 for six before losing its last four wickets for just 31 runs. Suthar struck three times in the 76th over before removing the final batter in the 78th, completing a match-winning six-wicket haul and his first 10-wicket match haul in Test cricket.
Dinusha top-scored for Sri Lanka with 84, but the hosts could not withstand India’s spin attack on the final morning.
A new name in India’s spin armoury
For Suthar, the performance represents a remarkable start to his Test career.
The 23-year-old had already impressed on debut against Afghanistan, and his display in Galle underlined his ability to operate effectively in demanding overseas conditions.
His 10-wicket match haul also places him among a select group of Indian bowlers to have achieved the feat in Test cricket. More importantly for India, his emergence provides another left-arm spin option alongside the experience of Ravindra Jadeja.
India regain momentum
The victory is significant for India after a difficult period in Test cricket and gives captain Shubman Gill another important result in his developing leadership tenure.
The first Test also demonstrated the changing nature of the Galle surface. Although the venue is traditionally associated with spin, fast bowlers played a significant role during the match, with pace accounting for eight of the 14 wickets on one particularly eventful day.
India will now look to close out the series in Colombo. The second Test is scheduled to begin on Aug. 23.
For Sri Lanka, the challenge is to recover quickly. For India, the Galle victory offers more than a series lead: it signals the emergence of another potential match-winning spinner in Suthar.
