এসপিটি নিউজ, কলকাতা, ২২ জুলাই: ভারতের বহুভাষিক ঐতিহ্যকে আধুনিক প্রযুক্তির মাধ্যমে নতুনভাবে তুলে ধরতে কলকাতার জাতীয় গ্রন্থাগারে উদ্বোধন হল দেশের প্রথম ইমার্সিভ ভাষা জাদুঘর ‘মিউজিয়াম অফ ওয়ার্ড’। কেন্দ্রীয় স্বরাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী ও সমবায়মন্ত্রী অমিত শাহ এই জাদুঘরের আনুষ্ঠানিক উদ্বোধন করেন। অনুষ্ঠানে উপস্থিত ছিলেন পশ্চিমবঙ্গের মুখ্যমন্ত্রী শুভেন্দু অধিকারী, রাজ্যের অর্থমন্ত্রী স্বপন দাশগুপ্ত, গণশিক্ষা প্রসার ও গ্রন্থাগার পরিষেবা দফতরের মন্ত্রী গৌরীশঙ্কর ঘোষ, কেন্দ্রীয় স্বরাষ্ট্রসচিব গোবিন্দ মোহন, সংস্কৃতি মন্ত্রকের সচিব বিবেক আগরওয়াল, যুগ্মসচিব (মিউজিয়ামস) লিলি পান্ডেয়া এবং জাতীয় বিজ্ঞান জাদুঘর পরিষদের মহাপরিচালক কে. এস. মুরলী–সহ বহু বিশিষ্ট ব্যক্তি।
জাতীয় গ্রন্থাগার চত্বরে অবস্থিত ঐতিহাসিক বেলভেডিয়ার হাউসে গড়ে ওঠা এই জাদুঘরটি ভারতের ভাষা, লিপি, সাহিত্য ও যোগাযোগ ব্যবস্থার হাজার বছরের বিবর্তনের এক অনন্য দলিল। প্রায় ৩৮০টি ভাষার ইতিহাস, বিকাশ ও বর্তমান অবস্থান এখানে তুলে ধরা হয়েছে। এর মধ্যে রয়েছে ২০১১ সালের জনগণনায় নথিভুক্ত ১২১টি ভাষা, পাশাপাশি এমন বহু ঐতিহাসিক ভাষাও স্থান পেয়েছে যেগুলি আজ আর দৈনন্দিন ব্যবহারে নেই।
অত্যাধুনিক ইমার্সিভ প্রযুক্তি, ইন্টারঅ্যাকটিভ ইনস্টলেশন, অডিও–ভিজ্যুয়াল উপস্থাপনা এবং দুর্লভ নিদর্শনের সমন্বয়ে দর্শনার্থীরা ভাষার জন্ম, বিকাশ এবং সমাজ–সংস্কৃতির সঙ্গে তার গভীর সম্পর্ককে এক নতুন অভিজ্ঞতার মাধ্যমে অনুভব করতে পারবেন। জাদুঘরটি মোট নয়টি থিমভিত্তিক গ্যালারিতে বিভক্ত, যেখানে সিন্ধু–সরস্বতী সভ্যতার প্রাচীন প্রতীক থেকে শুরু করে পুনরুজ্জীবিত গুঞ্জালা গোঁডি লিপি, লোকমুখে প্রচলিত কাহিনি, সংগীত, অভিনয় এবং বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন সংস্কৃতির সঙ্গে ভাষার আদানপ্রদানের ইতিহাস তুলে ধরা হয়েছে।
এখানে ভারতের বিভিন্ন ভাষার কবি, সাহিত্যিক, দার্শনিক, পণ্ডিত ও গল্পকারদের অবদানও বিশেষভাবে তুলে ধরা হয়েছে। একই সঙ্গে জনসাধারণের মধ্যে জ্ঞান বিস্তারে পাবলিক লাইব্রেরি আন্দোলনের ভূমিকাও গুরুত্ব সহকারে উপস্থাপিত হয়েছে।
মোট ₹৪১ কোটি ব্যয়ে এই প্রকল্পটি ধাপে ধাপে বাস্তবায়িত হচ্ছে। প্রথম পর্যায়ে প্রায় ২,২৮২ বর্গমিটার প্রদর্শনী এলাকা নির্মাণে ব্যয় হয়েছে ₹১৫ কোটি। পরবর্তী পর্যায়ে আরও গ্যালারি, একটি স্মারক বিপণি ও ক্যাফে এবং ভবনের বাইরের অংশে ফ্যাসাড প্রজেকশন ম্যাপিং চালু করা হবে বলে জানানো হয়েছে।
জাতীয় গ্রন্থাগারের মতো ঐতিহাসিক প্রতিষ্ঠানে এই জাদুঘর গড়ে ওঠায় বই ও পাণ্ডুলিপি সংরক্ষণের সঙ্গে ভাষা ও জ্ঞানের জীবন্ত ধারার এক অনন্য সংযোগ তৈরি হয়েছে। কেন্দ্রীয় সংস্কৃতি মন্ত্রকের মতে, ‘মিউজিয়াম অফ ওয়ার্ড’ ভবিষ্যতে ভাষা গবেষণা, শিক্ষা এবং সাধারণ মানুষের অংশগ্রহণের অন্যতম প্রধান জাতীয় কেন্দ্র হিসেবে গড়ে উঠবে এবং নতুন প্রজন্মকে ভারতের সমৃদ্ধ বহুভাষিক ঐতিহ্য সম্পর্কে আরও গভীরভাবে অনুপ্রাণিত করবে।
অনুষ্ঠানে দেশের বিভিন্ন প্রান্তের শিক্ষাবিদ, ভাষাবিদ, লেখক, সংস্কৃতি কর্মী, ছাত্রছাত্রী এবং প্রশাসনিক আধিকারিকরা উপস্থিত ছিলেন। শেষে জাতীয় বিজ্ঞান জাদুঘর পরিষদের মহাপরিচালক কে. এস. মুরলী ধন্যবাদজ্ঞাপন করেন।
জাদুঘরটি প্রতিদিন সকাল ১০টা থেকে সন্ধ্যা ৬টা পর্যন্ত খোলা থাকবে। সোমবার বন্ধ। দর্শনার্থীদের জন্য সুখবর, ২০২৬ সালের ১৫ আগস্ট পর্যন্ত প্রবেশ সম্পূর্ণ বিনামূল্যে রাখা হয়েছে। ভারতের ভাষিক বৈচিত্র্যকে প্রযুক্তির সহায়তায় নতুন প্রজন্মের সামনে তুলে ধরার এই উদ্যোগ নিঃসন্দেহে দেশের সাংস্কৃতিক ইতিহাসে এক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মাইলফলক হয়ে থাকবে।

India opens first immersive language museum in Kolkata

India on Wednesday inaugurated its first immersive language museum, the Museum of Word, at the National Library in Kolkata, in a move aimed at preserving and showcasing the country’s vast linguistic and literary heritage through interactive technology.
The museum was inaugurated by Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah at the historic Belvedere House, located within the National Library campus, in the presence of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, senior state ministers, and officials from the Union Ministry of Culture.
Described by the government as a landmark cultural initiative, the museum presents the evolution, diversity, and continuing legacy of nearly 380 Indian languages, including the 121 languages recorded in the 2011 Census of India as well as several historical languages that are no longer in everyday use.
Spread across nine thematic galleries, the museum uses immersive digital technologies, interactive installations, audio-visual presentations, and artefacts to trace the development of speech, scripts, literature, and communication across millennia. The galleries include First Word, My Mother Tongue, Navrasa, Journey of Languages, Honouring the Legends, Oral Traditions, Performing Traditions, Global Dialogue, and Public Library Movement.
According to the Ministry of Culture, the exhibition begins with symbols from the Indus-Saraswati Civilization and includes the revived Gunjala Gondi script, while also highlighting India’s oral storytelling traditions, performing arts, and linguistic exchanges with the wider world.
The museum has been developed with a sanctioned outlay of ₹41 crore ($4.8 million) and is being implemented in phases. The first phase, inaugurated on Wednesday, covers about 2,282 square metres of exhibition space on the first floor and was completed at a cost of ₹15 crore.
Future phases will add galleries on the ground floor, a souvenir shop and café, and a façade projection mapping programme, officials said.
The National Library, whose origins date back to the Calcutta Public Library established in 1836, has been housed in Belvedere House since 1948. Officials said the location creates a unique link between the preservation of books and manuscripts and the living traditions of language and knowledge.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior government officials, academicians, linguists, authors, cultural practitioners, and students from various schools. K. S. Murali, Director General of the National Council of Science Museums, delivered the vote of thanks.
The Museum of Word will remain open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on all days except Mondays. Entry will be free for all visitors until August 15, 2026.
